Word Connections 1

Words can be connected because they are opposites.

In this series of 11-plus verbal reasoning quizzes, you have to find TWO words, ONE from each set in brackets that will complete the sentence in the most sensible way. Choose the correct answer from the four choices available. The correct answer might be two opposites, two synonyms, or two words that share another characteristic.

If you enjoying reading and your reading comprehension skills are good, you should find these questions fairly straightforward. However, before you get stuck in, read the example and make sure you follow it, so that you'll know exactly what you need to do to get ten out of ten.

Also remember to read the helpful comments that appear once you've chosen your answer - these are there to explain why the answers are correct.

begin is a synonym of start and finish is a synonym of end and the others are unrelated.

    Ugly is to (beautiful pretty attractive) as old is to (young aged ancient).
    The correct answer is beautiful young because beautiful and young are both opposites of ugly and old

    French is to (France country language) as Flemish is to (Germany nation Belgium).
    The correct answer is France Belgium because French is the language spoken in France and Flemish is one of the languages spoken in Belgium. Do you know other languages Belgians speak?

    High is to (building height tall) as deep is to (water shallow depth).
    The correct answer is height depth because height is the the noun we get from the adjective high and depth is the noun we get from the adjective deep. What is the noun from the adjective strong?

    Freedom is to (liberty jail captivity) as anger is to (fury raged calm).
    The correct answer is liberty fury because liberty and freedom mean the same thing. The only choice which means the same as anger is fury. Raged is close, but it is a verb, while anger is a noun

    Orange is to (banana yellow fruit) as lemon is to (duck juice apple).
    The correct answer is banana apple because orange and banana are both types of fruit, while lemon and apple are also types of fruit. No other choice works
  7. Find TWO words, ONE from each set in brackets below that will complete the sentence in the most sensible way.
    Heavy is to (metal lift lead) as thin is to (diet slim paper).
    The correct answer is lead paper because lead is heavy and paper is thin. The answers we needed were both nouns which could be described by heavy and thin. Metal might have worked but some metals are not heavy!

    Wheat is to (crop corn tractor) as barley is to (rice field whiskey).
    The correct answer is corn rice because wheat and corn are both crops, while barley and rice are also crops. Remember the extra puzzle in question 3? The official languages spoken in Belgium include French, German and Belgian Dutch. Regional languages include Walloon and Flemish

    Draw is to (pencil artist scribble) as sing is to (tenor orchestra music).
    The correct answer is artist tenor because draw is something an artist does, while song is something a tenor does. A tenor is a singer with a very high voice. Other types of singer include alto and baritone. Remember the puzzle from question 4? The noun we can get from strong is strength
  10. Find TWO words, ONE from each set in brackets below that will complete the sentence in the most sensible way.
    Shallow is to (deep water end) as warm is to (ice fire snow).
    The correct answer is water fire because shallow is an adjective that can be applied to water, while warm is an adjective that can be applied only to the word fire in the choices available. Imagine warm ice! Congratulations! You have completed the first in the Word Connections series
