A county usually represents an administrative division of a country but in the UK, politics is never that straight-forward....
For the purpose of administration England is divided up into 83 counties plus Greater London and the Isles of Scilly.
There are 48 "Ceremonial Counties" which are also known as "Geographic Counties".
Six of the largest "Geographic Counties" are sub-divided into smaller "Metropolitan districts" and for the sake of clarity these are given below:
There are 10 "Metropolitan districts" in the "Metropolitan county" of Greater Manchester:
City of Manchester, City of Salford, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan.
There are 5 "Metropolitan districts" in the "Metropolitan county" of Merseyside:
City of Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens, Wirral.
There are 4 "Metropolitan districts" in the "Metropolitan county" of South Yorkshire:
Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaser, Rotherham.
There are 5 "Metropolitan districts" in the "Metropolitan county" of Tyne and Wear:
Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Sunderland.
There are 7 "Metropolitan districts" in the "Metropolitan county" of West Midlands:
Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall, Wolverhampton.
There are 5 "Metropolitan districts" in the "Metropolitan county" of West Yorkshire:
Leeds, Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Wakefield.
To make matters worse, The Royal Mail used to have 48 "Postal Counties" but these have now been abandoned!
Confused? Let's hope the politicians understand what they are doing! For the purpose of these quizzes, we are solely concerned with the Geographic Counties - they are the ones that most people know and love.
