Most authoritative garden sources talk about "Pests and Diseases" but we prefer the gentler approach of gardening "Friends and Foes".
One of the great joys of gardening is the interaction you have with the various lifeforms that stopover in the garden. Some of the visitors like Hedgehogs, Ladybirds, Robins and Wrens are universally welcome. Pigeons and Rabbits might be regarded as mixed blessings. Others like Aphids, Cabbage root fly and Leaf miner should be regarded as temporary inconveniences that can and will be dealt with. It's like a game of cards in which you hold all the aces.
Looking after your garden properly will in itself discourage most of the unwelcome guests. The two golden rules are keep the weeds down everywhere and practice crop rotation in the vegetable patch.
The pictures in the quizzes are not always pretty - it is difficult to show you a nice-looking Blackfly (see quiz Pests 1) or an attractive larvae of a Codling moth (see quiz Pests 2) so be prepared to see your potential enemies in all their gory detail!
The last thing we want to do in this section is discourage you. You will do well to remember that whatever pathogen, virus, bacterium, prion or fungus that attacks your garden you will always be bigger and cleverer than it is.
Each quiz consists of 10 questions and each question has 4 multiple choice answers. At the top of each quiz you are given a choice of how you want to play it and this affects what happens when you provide an incorrect answer. You can either have the correct answer given immediately, or you can choose to have the questions presented again at the end of the quiz. To print any of the Key Stage 3 quizzes (both questions and answers) click the “Print” link at the bottom of the quiz.
