The word "Herb" is sometimes used as an abbreviation for herbaceous which, botanically speaking, is a flowering plant whose stem does not produce woody tissue and generally dies back at the end of each growing season. For the purpose of these quizzes we use the more familiar interpretion of herb, that is, any plant valued for its flavour, scent or medicinal properties.
Herbs usually come from the leafy, green part of the plant whereas spices come from bark, berries, fruit, root and seeds. In cooking, herbs are used in small quantities mainly for flavouring whilst vegetables form the substance of food.
Several herbs flourish only in hot climates but the ones featured here will all grow happily in the British Isles.
Each quiz consists of 10 questions and each question has 4 multiple choice answers. At the top of each quiz you are given a choice of how you want to play it and this affects what happens when you provide an incorrect answer. You can either have the correct answer given immediately, or you can choose to have the questions presented again at the end of the quiz.
