There is significant debate about what a vegetable actually is. What a cook refers to as a vegetable may not be considered as such by a scientist. Likewise what an American calls a vegetable may not be considered a vegetable by an English person. The Supreme Court of the United States even got embroiled in the subject when it was asked to determine whether a tomato was a fruit or a vegetable. To the surprise of many Brits (and scientists) the Supreme Court ruled that the tomato is a vegetable!
For the purposes of these quizzes we have adopted the traditional view of 'vegetable' in the UK. As a general rule we believe that it is any part of a plant that is eaten but that is not a sweet fruit. Furthermore, we have chosen to think of a vegetable as something that is savoury and usually cooked before it is eaten.
That still leaves us with the problem of the tomato - it can be sweet or savoury, eaten raw or cooked. In deference to our good friends on the other side of the Atlantic we have classified the tomato as a vegetable in this section but we have also included it in our quizzes on fruit!
Each quiz consists of 10 questions and each question has 4 multiple choice answers. At the top of each quiz you are given a choice of how you want to play it and this affects what happens when you provide an incorrect answer. You can either have the correct answer given immediately, or you can choose to have the questions presented again at the end of the quiz. To print any of the Key Stage 3 quizzes (both questions and answers) click the “Print” link at the bottom of the quiz.
