This English and Literacy quiz informs KS1 children of collective nouns and how to categorise words and items into groups. This quiz will aid their reading and comprehension skills, as well as expand Year 1 vocabulary and all-round knowledge of literacy and the English language.

We can put certain things in groups. An apple is a type of fruit and so, all fruits can be grouped together. The word ‘fruit’ is a common noun.

    Tools are used by electricians, plumbers and carpenters. They often have a tool box and will have lots of different types of hammers and spanners.
  8. Which group does the word 'doll' belong to?
    Dolls are toys and the most popular type of doll is Barbie. Barbie's first outfit was a black and white striped swimsuit.
  9. Which group does the word 'peach' belong to?
    If one of the answers was 'colour' you could have ticked that one too as peach is the name of a fruit and a colour.
  10. Which group does the word 'sword' belong to?
    There is a famous sword in the story of King Arthur where he pulled the sword (called Excalibur) out of a stone.
