"I love anything quiz related." - Natasha Hamilton

Some words are destined to remain mysterious. Take the word "quiz", for example. Does the word seem odd, or not? In its construction, it would almost appear to be related to Latin. It is not, however, a Latin word. Even the Oxford English Dictionary is unable to give the origin of the word "quiz". In the eighteenth century it was used to refer to an odd or eccentric person, and by the nineteenth century it was used in the sense known today, as in the popular competition, the pub quiz. Or, in fact, in "Education Quizzes".

So the next time you hear anyone complain about people using words which are not "real", you can remind them that the English language has been adding new words for a very long time and that most of these words are now perfectly integrated into our daily vocabulary.

Try not to make up any new words while taking this spelling quiz!
