Some words are destined to remain mysterious. Take the word "quiz", for example. Does the word seem odd, or not? In its construction, it would almost appear to be related to Latin. It is not, however, a Latin word. Even the Oxford English Dictionary is unable to give the origin of the word "quiz". In the eighteenth century it was used to refer to an odd or eccentric person, and by the nineteenth century it was used in the sense known today, as in the popular competition, the pub quiz.
