"The most splendid achievement of all is the constant striving to surpass yourself and to be worthy of your own approval." - Denis Waitley.
One useful way to remember spellings is by noticing if you can find any other words contained within a longer word. Sometimes this is just a coincidence. For example, the word "splendid" contains the word "did", but this is accidental, it does not mean that the two words are related, as can be seen by considering the word "splendour".
At other times, the words are clearly connected. So the appearance of the word "pass" in "surpass" is not a coincidence, but occurs because of the words' related meanings.
So, with this in mind, does it seem coincidental that "achievement" almost appears to contain the word "chief"? The words are in fact related through the Old French word, achiever, from which "achieve" is derived. This word in its most literal sense meant to become the head (or chief).
