English Quiz - Adjectives 01 (Questions)

A Quiz about Using Describing Words

This KS3 English quiz takes a look at adjectives. Adjectives are "describing words". In the phrase "the red balloon" the word "red" is an adjective and the word "balloon" is a noun. Adjectives modify nouns and pronouns.

Adjectives can tell you what an object looks like, what its size is and how it feels to the touch. They can describe people and places in the same way. In the sentence "It was a warm, sunny, breezy day", the adjectives modifying the noun "day" are "warm", "sunny" and "breezy". In the sentence "He examined the old weather-beaten chest", the adjectives modifying the noun "chest" are "old" and "weather-beaten".

Adjective also describe feelings. The words "sorrowful", "miserable", "excited", "placid" and "jolly" are adjectives. Sometimes you'll see that adjectives might not be next to the noun which they modify. In the sentence "She was thrilled to win the prize", the adjective "thrilled" modifies the pronoun "she".

Try and use a variety of adjectives to make your writing more descriptive and more interesting.
