Plants [show/hide]

Plants are a diverse and beautiful part of our world. Not only do we decorate our gardens with colourful and seasonal flowers, we wouldn’t be able to breathe without trees.

The reason plants are green is down to chlorophyll, a biomolecule which is vital in photosynthesis. Plants derive energy from the sun and you will notice that most flowers bear their ‘faces’ towards the sun. Plants generally start out as seeds; however there are also rhizomes, spores, tubers and bulbs.

The variety of seeds is as varied as the types of plants. One favourite seed as children is the samara from the Maple tree. These are commonly known as helicopters from the way they twirl their ‘blades’ as they make their way towards the ground. Another well-known seed is from the dandelion and children blow on the seed heads to tell the time.
