A babbling brook is one of the joys of a walk in nature on a warm day. Not only is the sound of the water soothing, but if you take a few moments to sit quietly at the bank, you will see and hear a variety of creatures going about their business.
Rivers and streams are full of life, and not just fish. Many animals, insects and birds live in and around rivers and streams. For instance, the dragonfly spends its larval stage in the water before becoming a flying insect. Of course, the dragonfly is mostly seen around bodies of water in the warmer months, as they feed on mosquitoes.
The most well-known creature of rivers is fish. Over 40% of all known species of fish are found in freshwater. Some fish are born in freshwater and move onto salt water, and vice versa.
