Acting has been part of human life for thousands of years.
The first recorded case of an actor performing took place in 534 BC. Actors are
sometimes known as Thespians. This is in honour of the Greek performer called
Thespis. He stepped on to the stage at the Theatre Dionysus and became
the first known person to speak words as a character in a play or story. Before
this, stories were only known to be told in song and dance or in third person
narrative. To this day, theatrical legend maintains that Thespis exists as a
mischievous spirit, and disasters in the theatre are sometimes blamed on his
ghostly intervention.
We are so fond of our actors and actresses that we will seek
out a film purely because they appear in it - despite knowing that it's the
role they play (not who they are) that is important.
