Vocabulary - You Are How Old?
Can you tell someone your age in Spanish? If not, this vocabulary quiz might help!

Vocabulary - You Are How Old?

In this Spanish Easy Review vocabulary quiz you will be reviewing how to tell your age. When you are young, your age is a big thing. You are constantly being asked: How old are you? In fact, you seem to ask that question of someone else just as often. In order to do this quiz, you will need to have developed some skills and some Spanish vocabulary words. Words that include question words, words that include counting and which verb ‘to be’ should be used. As age is constantly changing, it is a temporary condition. The Spanish temporary to be verb is estar.

To ask someone their age in Spanish you would ask: ¿Cuántos años tienes?

[Did you notice the two questions marks with the first being upside down? That is very important!] This question literally translates as: How many years do you have? You can now respond to this question in two ways. The first is: I have 12 years. The second way is: I am 12. In Spanish this would be:

Yo tengo doce años. (You could also answer: Tengo doce años.)

-or-

Estoy doce. (You could also answer: Yo estoy doce.

If you have not already taken the Spanish Easy Review quiz titled Ser versus Estar you might want to check that one out right now as it will show you how to conjugate estar. If you feel comfortable with that, then move on to the quiz below.

There are ten sentences that will ask for a person’s age with an answer given in English. From the four answers given. Locate the correct Spanish Answer to the question. Make sure you pay attention to the correct conjugation of the verb, as well as to the number vocabulary.

1.
¿Cuántos años tienes? I am 22 years old.
Está veinte y dos años.
Soy veinte y dos.
Estoy veinte y dos años.
Es veinte y dos días.
As age is a temporary condition, the Spanish verb for to be that needs to be used here is estar. The second and last answers are using the permanent to be verb so they are incorrect. In addition, the last answer is answering in days and not years. The first answer is answering as you/he/she is 22 years old. The third answer, however, is answering the question correctly as it says, I am 22 years old. (Did you notice that the question used the singular familiar you?)
2.
¿Cuántos años tienes? I have 47 years.
Yo estoy cuarenta y siete años.
Yo tengo cuarenta y siete años.
Yo tiene cuarenta y seis años.
Yo tenamos cuarenta y seis años.
For this one you are answering with I have and not I am, therefore, the first answer can be eliminated. The age is 47 which is cuarenta y siete which means that both the third and last answers can be eliminated. In addition, the third and last answers show the incorrect conjugated verb with the pronoun I. The second answer shows the correct response and has the correct conjugated verb and years. (Did you notice that the question used the singular familiar you?)
3.
¿Cuántos años tienes? I have 70 years.
Tengo setenta años.
Tengo diez y siete años.
Yo estoy setenta años.
Tiene setenta años.
The response should reflect the I have rather than I am. Therefore, the third answer can be eliminated. The last answer is conjugated to read either you/he/she has so it, too, is not correct. The second answer reads, I have 17 years and not 70 years. It is not correct either. The first answer reads, I have 70 years. It is the correct answer.
4.
¿Cuántos años él tiene? He is 14.
Tengo catorce años.
Él tiene catorce.
Es catorce años.
Él está catorce.
Notice that the question is now asking: How old is he? or How many years does he have? Therefore, the pronoun I should not be in the answer. The first answer is conjugated for the pronoun I making it incorrect. The response should read he is and not he has. The second answer reads, He has 14 years. It, too, is not correct. Age is a temporary condition so the verb estar should be used. The third answer shows the conjugation of the verb ser so it is not correct. The last answer shows the correct answer that reads, He is 14.
5.
¿Cuántos años tienes? I am 100 years old.
Yo estoy noventa y diez años.
Yo estoy cien años.
Yo estás cien años.
Yo está cien años.
First look at the pronoun I. In Spanish that is yo. However, the third answer is conjugated for the singular familiar pronoun of you while the last answer is conjugated for the singular formal pronoun of you and/or for he/she making both answers incorrect. The first answer does not read 100 but rather 90 and 10 which is the incorrect way to say 100. The second answer, on the other hand, is conjugated correctly and has the right number. It translates as I am 100 years old.
6.
¿Cuántos años tienes? I have 83 years.
Soy ochenta y tres años.
Estoy ochenta y tres años.
Tengo ochenta y tres años.
Eres ochenta y tres años.
The response should reflect the I have rather than I am. Therefore, the first and second answers can be eliminated. The last answer is conjugated in the singular, familiar form of you which is not the answer needed here. The third answer, on the other hand, does show the correct verb, conjugation of the verb and age number. It translates as I have 83 years.
7.
¿Cuántos años ella tiene? She has thirty-five years.
Tienen trenta y cinco años.
Tienes trenta y cinco años.
Ellas tienen treinta y cinco años.
Ella tiene treinta y cinco años.
Notice that the question is asking: How old is she? or How many years does she have? The first and third answer are conjugated for the plural formal pronoun form of you and/or for they respectively making them incorrect. In addition, the first answer has the misspelled the number. The second answer is conjugated as the singular familiar form of you and has the misspelled the number so it too is not correct. The last answer does show the correct conjugated verb for she has, as well as the correctly spelled number.
8.
¿Cuántos años tienes? I am 61.
Estoy sesenta y uno.
Yo tengo sesenta y uno años.
Tenemos setenta y uno.
Soy sesenta y uno años.
The answer here is I am and not I have. This means that the second and third answers can be eliminated. The last answer also shows the incorrect age. The last answer is using the verb ser which is a permanent condition. As age is temporary, this is the wrong verb so it is not correct. The first answer shows the correct verb, the correct conjugation of I am and the correct age.
9.
¿Cuántos años él tiene? He is one year old.
Yo tiene uno años.
Él está uno año.
Él estoy uno años.
Ella está uno año.
The question here is asking: How old is he? or How many years does he have? Therefore, the pronoun is he which is él in Spanish. Now you can eliminate the first and last answers. The third answer shows the wrong conjugated form of the verb that goes with the pronoun he. It shows the conjugated form that goes with the pronoun I. In addition, the response is one year so year is not plural. The singular form of year is año. The second answer shows the correct pronoun, the correct conjugated verb and the correct year and it translates as, He has one year.
10.
¿Cuántos años tienes? I have eleven years.
Yo tenéis trece años.
Yo tenga doce años.
Yo tengo once años.
Yo tengo diez y uno años.
The correct pronoun to use here is yo for I. The first answer, however, has the conjugated verb for the singular familiar pronoun for you and the wrong age so it is not correct. The second answer has a misspelled verb and has the wrong age. The last answer has the correct conjugated verb but the age is not written correctly for the number eleven. That leaves the third answer which has the correct pronoun, conjugated verb and age.
