Vocabulary - A Smorgasbord of Words! (Part 1)
'Mother married Father in April.' Can you translate this sentence into Spanish?

Vocabulary - A Smorgasbord of Words! (Part 1)

Do you know what smorgasbord means? It means a varied collection. In other words, a collection of many things that can be related or unrelated. Between the Spanish Easy Review quiz series and the Spanish Medium Review quiz series you have been learning or relearning a mountain full of new Spanish vocabulary words. Each vocabulary quiz in the two series provided you with a list of words that you were then tested on. Since the words were included in the introductions to the quizzes, that made knowing the words found in those quizzes a little easier. Although those quizzes did test your memory, they did not completely challenge you. Therefore, this Spanish Medium Review quiz will challenge you on being able to quickly draw upon the words in your Spanish vocabulary bank, especially since here, you have no idea what words you will be required to know.

In order to increase your challenge, a subseries of four smorgasbord quizzes have been created. There will be no new or old vocabulary words provided to you. Rather, you will have a mixture of quiz sentences and/or questions that you will be given or asked. They could be about anything so you will really have to focus on what you are being shown. For example, if a word is capitalized, you will need to find the matching translation to that word; if you have an entire sentence in English, you will need to find that entire sentence in Spanish and visa-versa. You may need to find the correct present or past tense form of a verb or include the correct article. Watch out for words that may need to be made singular or plural. Again, this requires you to have your Spanish thinking caps securely on.

Do not let this challenge frighten you. You will more than likely do a lot better than you currently realize. Still, these smorgasbord quizzes will be a good sounding board to see where you need more practice and where you are doing pretty well. In addition, do not worry too much about your score. If it is low, again, it should help you understand where you need to go back and study some more. After that, come back and retake these quizzes and see how much you are able to improve on them. Most of all, just relax and try to remember that learning a new language can be fun and that you really have all the time you need to master it! Now, let’s begin with Part 1 of this smorgasbord subseries.

1.

aquellas
aquellos
esas
This sentence is having you locate the correct demonstrative adjective for those. This sentence also contains the words 'over there' showing that there is a distance to the object or thing. The first and last answers can be eliminated as they do not indicate a distance. The Spanish word for shoes is zapatos which is a masculine word. Therefore, the demonstrative adjective must be masculine and plural as well. The Spanish word for those when there is distance is aquellos.
4.
Mrs. Peters is my new teacher.
Señora Peters esta mi nueva profesora.
Señora Peters es mi nuevo profesor.
Señora Peters está mi nuevo profesor.
Señora Peters es mi nueva profesora.
In this sentence, as Mrs. Peters is a female the word teacher must be in the feminine form. The adjective to teacher, i.e., new, must also be in the feminine form. The second and third answers show the masculine forms so they can be eliminated. Spanish has two 'to be' verbs, i.e., ser and estar. Ser is for more permanent conditions and estar is for temporary conditions. Mrs. Peters is a permanent teacher so the verb ser needs to be used. The correct Spanish translation is then: Señora Peters es mi nueva profesora.
5.

rojo
The first answer means blue. The second answer means purple. The third answer means turquoise and the last answer means red. Blue, purple and red are all colors found in a rainbow. Turquoise is not.
