Writing - English to Spanish (1)
'She saw a big rainbow.' Can you write that sentence in Spanish?

Writing - English to Spanish (1)

In this Spanish Medium Review quiz you will have the opportunity to write out sentences from English to Spanish. You have finally made it to the writing quizzes. These quizzes will require you to, again, WRITE out your answers. Why? Because when trying to learn a new language, writing it down trains the brain into seeing each letter of the word. The very action of writing the words etches that word into your memory.

We here at EQ cannot see whether or not you are doing the writing part of this quiz and the others to follow, but by not doing the writing, it will take you much longer to be able to quickly draw upon your Spanish vocabulary and to work your way into being able to fluently speak the language. Do not be afraid to challenge yourself so take the time to not only read, but to write in this new language.

This is the first of two quizzes where you will be given a short sentence in English and then you will need to WRITE out that sentence in Spanish. Then see if you can match up your written sentence with one of the answers that has been provided to you here. Be sure to pay close attention to spelling and verb tenses and, of course, any accent marks. So get yourself some paper and pen (or pencil if that works better for you) and begin the quiz.

1.
Jennifer was in the kitchen.
Jennifer estuvo en la cocina.
Jennifer quedó en el sótano.
Jennifer está en el cuarto.
Jennifer estuvo en la despensa.
Each answer has correctly used the name Jennifer. Next, the verb is 'was' which is a past tense verb. The third answer is showing a present tense verb so it can be eliminated. The next thing to determine is the pronoun that can replace Jennifer. That would be she. The past tense verb of was (temporary condition) is estuvo. This means that the second answer can now be eliminated. The word 'in' is properly translated in each answer as 'en'. The Spanish word for kitchen is cocina. The last answer shows the Spanish word for pantry. Therefore, the correct translation is: Jennifer estuvo en la cocina.
2.
The lawyer spoke to the fireman.
La abogada habló a la bombera.
El abogado habló al bombero.
La abogada habló al bombero.
El abogado habló a la bombera.
In this sentence you do not know if the lawyer or the fireman is male or female. When you do not know, you always use the masculine form of the word. Therefore, the lawyer and the fireman should be in the masculine form. The first answer shows both as being feminine. The third answer shows a female lawyer while the last answer shows a female fireman. Only the second answer shows both in the masculine form making the correct translation: El abogado habló al bombero.
3.
The children went to school.
Los niños fueron al sótano.
Los niños fueron a la tienda.
Los niños fueron a la escuela.
Los niños fueron al parque.
Each answer has correctly translated 'The children went to'. However, the first answer states that they went to the basement. The second answer states they went to the store while the last answer states they went to the park. The third answer states that they went to school and is the proper translation.
4.
Ellen hid her money.
Ellen encubriste su dinero.
Ellen encubre su dinero.
Ellen encubrí su dinero
Ellen encubrió su dinero.
Each answer has correctly used Ellen, as well as translated 'her money'. The verb is hid which is a past tense form. The second answer shows a present tense form of the verb so it can be eliminated. Next you need to determine the pronoun that can replace Ellen. That would be she. The first answer shows the verb form for 'you hid' (singular familiar). That is not correct. The third answer shows the verb from for 'I hid'. Again, that is not correct. The last answer shows the verb form for 'she hid' which is the proper translation.
5.
Mother shops in the city.
Madre come en la ciudad.
Madre compra en la ciudad.
Madre comió en la ciudad.
Madre compró en la ciudad.
Each answer has correctly translated 'mother' and 'in the city'. The verb shops is a present tense verb. The third and last answer both show the past tense verb form which means that they can now be eliminated. The verb shown in the first answer is Spanish for eats. That is incorrect. The second answer does show the correct verb for shops, as well as the full, proper translation.
6.
William killed the spider.
Guillermo mató la araña.
Guillermo gustó la araña.
Guillermo limpió la araña.
Guillermo barrió la araña.
Each answer has correctly translated William, as well as translated 'the spider'. The verb killed is a past tense verb. Again, each answer shows a past tense verb. Next you need to determine the pronoun for William which is he. Again, each answer has correctly used the proper past tense form of a verb for he. However, the second answer states 'he liked'. The third answer states 'he cleaned', and the last answer states 'he swept'. Neither of these are correct. The first answer does state that 'he killed' and is the proper full translation.
7.
She saw a big rainbow.
Ella vio una tormenta grande.
Ella vio un lápiz grande.
Ella vio una gaviota grande.
Ella vio un arco iris grande.
Each answer has correctly translated 'she saw' and 'big'. However, the first answer states a big storm. The second answer states a big pencil, and the third answer states a big seagull. The last answer states a big rainbow and contains the full, proper translation.
8.

Encientro el tiempo.
Salto el tiempo.
Sé el tiempo.
Veo el tiempo.
Each answer has correctly translated 'the weather'. The verb (for the pronoun I) is 'I know'. The first answer states I find. The second answer states I skip, and the last answer states I see. The third answer, on the other hand, states I know and contains the proper full translation.
9.
He flew on an airplane.
Voló en un avion.
Voló en un avión.
Volo en un avion.
Volo en un avión.
Each answer has correctly translated 'on an'. To find the correct answer here, you will need to know how to spell each word. The Spanish verb for 'he flew' is 'voló'. Note that it has an accent mark. This now means that the third and last answers can be eliminated. The Spanish word for airplane is avión. It, too, has an accent mark which means that the first answer can now be eliminated. The proper full translation is: Voló en un avión.
10.
Sally described her dress.
Sally describió su vestido.
Sally describió su abrigo.
Sally describió su cinta.
Sally describió su tranvía.
Each answer has correctly translated 'Sally described her'. However, the second answer states 'described her coat'.
