How do you know if someone is speaking when you read a book?

Grade 4 Language - Speech Marks

When we read a story, sometimes the characters speak. We know a character is speaking because speech marks show us. When you see “ this means somebody has started speaking and this sign ” means they have finished.

“Go to the store today!” Mom told me.
“Go to the store today! Mom told me.”
“Go to the store today! Mom told me.
“Go to the store today,!” Mom told me.”
The quotation marks should only go around the actual words that are being said.

Sarah asked “May I call my friend?”
Sarah asked, “May I call my friend?”
“Sarah asked, “May I call my friend?”
Sarah asked “May, I call my friend?”
A comma should be placed after the word asked.

This sentence has the quotation marks around the words that are being said.

The comma is in the right place after the word said.

If you write who is speaking, make sure you never put that information in speech marks.

Don't forget to start speech with a capital letter.

The word 'said' is the most popular word to use when somebody is speaking.

How long will the baby sleep for? asked the doctor.
"Be quiet, the baby is sleeping," said the mother.
Whenever we write speech, we always begin with a capital letter, finish with some form of punctuation and open and close speech marks.

Speech marks are also called 'inverted commas'.
