What is a ratio? A ratio is the way we can determine how one number is related to another number. A ratio may be written as “A:B” or A/B. It can also be phrased as “A to B”.

If you are given two numbers to determine, such as, what is the ratio of 24 to 48, you will need to divide both numbers by their greatest common factor. In this case, the greatest common factor is “8” so we would write it as follows:

24 ÷ 8 = 3
48 ÷ 8 = 6

The answer would then be stated: The ratio of 24 to 48 is 3:6
