In 1905 Russia was defeated by Japan, and was also engulfed in an abortive revolutionary attempt by Lenin and others. Thereafter Russia seemed to prosper for a few years under Tsarist rule. But this did not last. In 1914 Russia felt obliged to go to the aid of Serbia under attack from Austria, and soon found herself at war with Austria's ally Germany.
