In this quiz you will once again be learning about adverbs. In fact, this Spanish Difficult Review quiz will take a look at the superlative adverbs.
As you have previously learned, there are many different types of adverbs. You learned that adverbs that end with the letters 'ly' in English and 'mente' in Spanish are known as 'Adverbs of Manner'. You also learned that adverbs that end with the letters 'er' in English are adverbs that indicate that something has more or less of a quantity or quality. This adverb is known as the 'Comparative Adverb'. That is because two or more things are being compared to each other. In order to show this in Spanish, the words más (more) or menos (less / minus) are placed before the noun, adverb or adjective that is being compared, i.e., big house (grande casa) becomes a bigger house (más grande casa). Now you are about to learn about adverbs that show the most.
In English, when something is 'the most', it is demonstrated by ending a word with the letters 'est'. This would then be the biggest house (la más grande casa). Adverbs that show the most are known as 'Superlative Adverbs'.
Did you notice that the Superlative Adverbs also use the Spanish words of más or menos? However, to distinguish them from the Comparative Adverbs the definite article is placed before más or menos when the Superlative Adverbs are used.
Once again when it comes to Spanish there are always exceptions to the rule. So too with Superlative Adverbs and Comparative Adverbs because there are a few irregular adverbs. Two such words are 'good' (bueno) and 'bad' (malo). In the Superlative and Comparative forms, 'good' becomes 'mejor' and 'bad' becomes 'peor'. For example:
ENGLISH | SPANISH |
---|---|
The car is good. | El coche es bueno. |
The car is better. | El coche es mejor. |
The car is the best. | El coche es el mejor. |
ENGLISH | SPANISH |
---|---|
The car is bad. | El coche es malo. |
The car is worse. | El coche es peor. |
The car is the worst. | El coche es el peor. |
Remember to pay attention to when the definite article is used and when it is not used because it DOES make a difference.
Now let’s move on to the quiz section. You will be given ten sentences in which each contains an adjective. Your task will be to find the sentence that shows the Superlative form of that sentence. The examples above will help you to understand this. Pay attention to gender as an answer could look correct but the gender is not. Also pay attention to spelling as there may be some tricky spellings shown as well. Now, are you ready for the quiz? Then let’s make this a great quiz!
