Comprehension - I Know What that Says!

This Spanish Easy Review comprehension quiz will challenge you on 'I know what that says'. Spanish is starting to get really exciting now that you know how to say many words. You have even had some practice in translating simple sentences. Both of those quizzes will help you in mastering this quiz. However, those quizzes had you translating English into Spanish. This quiz will now have you translating Spanish into English so that you can see that you 'know what that says!'

Below there are ten Spanish sentences with each sentence showing four possible translations. See if you can find the correct English translation to the given Spanish sentence.

1.
Cristina gusta helado de chocolate.
Christine has chocolate ice cream.
Christine likes chocolate ice cream.
Christine likes chocolate donuts.
Christine has chocolate donuts.
The correct translation of Cristina is Christine and this is shown correctly in each answer. Gusta is the conjugated form of the verb that reads [she] likes. It does not mean 'has so the first and last answers are not correct. The Spanish word helado means ice cream telling you that the third answer is not correct. The correct English translation of this given Spanish sentence is the second answer.
2.
El dentista está en.
The dentist is in.
The dentist is here.
The dentist has been.
The dentist was in.
Each answer has correctly translated el dentista as the dentist. The Spanish verb está means [he] is. This then tells you that the third and last answers are not correct. The Spanish word 'en' means 'in' letting you know that the first answer is the correct English translation of this Spanish sentence.
3.
Pedro es alemán.
Paul is Dutch.
Paul is grey.
Peter is German.
Peter is American.
Each answer has correctly translated es to be is. The correct English translation of Pedro is Peter. This then tells you that the first and second answers are not correct. Alemán is Spanish for German so the last answer is not correct. The third answer is the correct English translation of this given Spanish sentence. Notice that the nationality of German is not capitalized. Just as Spanish does not capitalize the days of the week or the months of the year, except under certain conditions such as being the first word in a sentence or part of a title, so too are nationalities not capitalized.

Ella besa el gato.
She sees the goat.
She likes the cat.
She kisses the pig.
She kisses the cat.
Each answer has correctly translated ella to be she and el to be the. The verb besa means she kisses so you can eliminate the first and second answers. The Spanish word gato means cat which means that the last answer is the correct English translation of this given Spanish sentence.
5.
Mis primos viven allí.
My children live here.
My nieces live there.
My cousins live there.
My nephews live here.
Each answer has correctly translated mis to be my and viven to be the plural for [they] live. The Spanish word primos means cousins and allí means there. Therefore, the third answer is the correct English translation for the given Spanish sentence.
6.
Yo estudio en lunes.
I step on animals.
I study on Monday.
I stand in line.
I stay in line.
Each answer has correctly translated yo as being I. The Spanish verb estudio means I study and en means in. Finally, lunes means Monday. This then tells you that the only correct English translation of the given Spanish sentence is the second answer.
7.
Ella hace dulce.
She makes candy.
She has candy.
She eats candy.
She likes candy.
Each answer has correctly translated ella as she and dulce as candy. The Spanish verb hace means [she] makes. Therefore, the first answer is the correct English translation for the given Spanish sentence.
8.
Ellos venden estufas.
He sells stuff.
We sell stoves.
You sell stuff.
They sell stoves.
The verb here is venden which means sells and/or sell. To know which way it is translated you need to know what the pronoun is. Ellos is Spanish for they. This now tells you that the first, second and third answers are not correct. In addition, estufas is Spanish for stoves. The last answer is the correct English translation for the given Spanish sentence.
9.
Esteban dice su abogado.
Stephen does his service.
Stephen decides his occupation.
Stephen tells his lawyer.
Stephen describes his apartment.
Each answer has correctly translated Esteban as being Stephen. Now you need to know what the verb 'dice' means. It is Spanish for [he] tells. Su means his and abogado means lawyer. This tells you that the third answer is the correct English translation for the given Spanish sentence.
10.
Ellos gustan aplaudir.
He likes to applaud.
They like to applaud.
You like to applaud.
We like to applaud.
Each answer has correctly translated aplaudir to be to applaud. Now looking at the pronoun ellos it is Spanish for 'they' which means the first, third and last answers are not correct. The second answer is the correct English translation of the given Spanish sentence.
