This Spanish Easy Review quiz will challenge you on prepositions.
Yup, Spanish has prepositions too! Do you remember what a preposition is? A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence. Prepositions tell us what is happening and when it is happening. In Spanish there are simple prepositions and complex prepositions. For now, we will focus only on some of the simple prepositions.
Another thing to note here is that in Spanish, a preposition does not always have one direct relationship to an English preposition but, rather, replaces or is used in place of several English words.
So now let’s look at some prepositions.
Spanish Preposition | English Equivalent | How It Is Used |
---|---|---|
a | at, to | In Spanish, 'a' (sounds like a short 'a') is used as in, 'He went TO the store' and 'He was AT the store.' |
ante | before, in the presence of | In Spanish, 'ante' is used as in, 'He went BEFORE the counsel' and 'He was IN THE PRESENCE OF greatness.' |
bajo | under, below | In Spanish, 'bajo' is used as in, 'Her shoes were UNDER the bed' and 'His skills were BELOW average.' |
con | with | He went WITH his father to buy a car. |
contra | against, in exchange for | In Spanish, 'contra' is used as in, 'He went AGAINST his father’s wishes' and 'IN EXCHANGE FOR answers he was paid money.' |
de | of, about, from | Pronounced as 'day'. In Spanish, 'de' is used in 'House OF red' and 'He received a letter FROM his best friend' and 'It was ABOUT 10 o’clock.' |
en | in, into, by, inside, within | In Spanish, the word 'en' is used in place of each of these English equivalent words. |
hasta | until, as far as, till | This word is pronounced as ă-stă. The 'h' is totally silent. An example would be 'Hasta luego' which means 'Until later.' |
por | for, because of, in order, through, per | Pronounced as 'poor'. In Spanish, 'por' is used in place of each of these English equivalent words or phrases. |
sin | without | I cannot go WITHOUT my mother’s permission. |
