In order to get you warmed up for the quizzes to follow, this quiz will focus on your ability to comprehend Spanish simple sentences that you must read and then translate into English. As the series progresses (Quizzes 2 – 4) – the reading will progress with it. For now, however, have a look at the following ten Spanish sentences and then locate each of their correct English translations.

1.
Daniel tiene un portátil nuevo.
Daniel has a new Porsche.
Daniel has a new laptop.
Daniel has one new part.
Daniel has good potential.
Each answer has correctly translated 'Daniel tiene' as 'Daniel has'. However, the other words have been translated differently. The word portátil means laptop and nuevo means new. Only the second answer shows these words translated correctly.
2.
¿Cuánto almacenamiento necesitas?
How much storage do you need?
How many albums are needed?
How much alarm is necessary?
How many alternatives do you need?
The Spanish word 'cuánto' means 'how much' when the word/noun that follows it is singular and 'how many' when the word/noun that follows it is plural. As the word following cuánto is singular, you know that the sentence should begin with 'How much'. The second and last answers begin with 'how many' so they can be eliminated. The word 'necesitas' means 'need' and not 'necessary'. The third answer can now be eliminated. Finally, the word 'almacenamiento' (that’s a long one) means 'storage'. Therefore, the first answer is the answer that shows the correct translation.
3.
Mi padre es un entrenador de béisbol.
My father is a baseball professional.
My father is a baseball umpire.
My father is a baseball coach.
My father is a fan of baseball.
Each answer has correctly translated 'Mi padre es un' as 'My father is a'. Notice the sentence has 'de' in it which means 'of' or 'from' although those words do not always get translated but are rather understood. It shows possession. That means that 'entrenador' and 'béisbol' are connected. 'Entrenador' means 'coach' and 'béisbol' means 'baseball'. 'Entrenador de béisbol' means 'baseball coach'. The third answer shows the correct translation of the given sentence.
4.
Ponemos el azulejo en el baño.
They put blue in the bathroom.
They put a bluebird in the bathroom.
We put the soap in the bathroom.
We put tile in the bathroom.
First look at the verb ponemos. Determine which pronoun goes with it. It would be we. The first and second answers show the pronoun they making them both incorrect. 'En el baño' has been correctly translated in each answer. However, 'azulejo' means 'tile' and only the last answer shows that correctly.
5.
Mi nieta está feliz.
My granddaughter is happy.
My cousin is happy.
My daughter is happy.
My child is happy.
Each answer has correctly translated 'Mi' as 'My' and 'está feliz' as 'is happy'. The word 'nieta' is Spanish for 'granddaughter'. Therefore, it is the first answer that has been translated correctly.
6.

We borrowed a lot of money.
We gave the maid money.
We donated some money.
We give the citizens money.
Each answer has correctly shown that the pronoun that goes with the verb is we. In addition, each answer has correctly translated 'dinero' as 'money'. The verb dimos is a past tense verb. The last answer shows the present tense form so it can be eliminated. 'Dimos' means 'we gave' and the word 'criada' means 'maid'. As such, the second answer shows the correct translation.
7.
Él ve la televisión en sábado.
He saw televison on Saturday.
He watches television on Sunday.
He watches television on Saturday.
He saw television on Sunday.
The pronoun of he has been given. The verb 've' means 'he watches' (and/or 'he sees'). The first and last answers show the past tense form of the verb so they can be eliminated. Televisión has been translated correctly in each answer. The word 'sábado' is Spanish for 'Saturday'. Therefore, the third answer is the answer with the correct translation.
8.
Mi abuelo me llevó al desfile.

Each answer has correctly translated 'Mi abuelo' as 'My grandfather'. The verb here is 'tomó' and it is a past tense verb form meaning 'took' while the word 'desfile' means 'parade'. Knowing this, it is clear that the last answer shows the correct translation.
9.
Darryl compró una nueva brújula.
Darryl bought a new jeep.
Darryl bought a new jacket.
Darryl bought a new motor.
Darryl bought a new compass.
Each answer here has correctly translated 'Darryl compró una nueva' as 'Darryl bought a new'. That leaves the word 'brújula' which means 'compass'.
10.
