This is the second of our medium level quizzes on addition and subtraction. Like the previous quiz, it will give you a chance to practice adding and subtracting hundreds. Don’t worry – it’s not much more difficult than working with numbers less than 100 – especially if you add the hundreds first, then the tens and finally the ones.
You might be tempted to get your calculator out for this quiz – don’t! Trying to find the answers using nothing but your brain will set you in good stead for future encounters with maths. If you can do simple mathematics like this in your head, then more advanced problems will be just that little bit easier.
So, if you are ready, heads down, pencils and pens put away and calculators confined to a drawer! Let’s begin.

It's a good idea to add the hundreds first, then the tens and finally the ones: 364 – 88 + 5 + 17 = (300) + (60 + 10 - 80) + (4 + 5 + 7 - 8) = (300) + (70 - 80) + (16 - 8) = 300 - 10 + 8 = 298
Remember to add the 100s, then 10s and finally ones. If you aren't sure of your answer, you can do the procedure again to double check

897 + 328 - 478 = (800 + 300 - 400) + (90 + 20 - 70) + (7 + 8 - 8) = (700) + (40) + (7) = 747
To avoid working with negative numbers, you can rearrange the problem: 376 - 597 + 233 = (376 + 233) - 597 = 609 - 597 = 12

With numbers less than 1,000, add the hundreds first, then the tens and then the ones. 608 + 753 - 487 = (600 + 700 - 400) + (50 - 80) + (8 + 3 - 7) = (900) + (-30) + (4) = 874
In multiple choice quizzes, the last digit in a number can show you the right answer. 6 + 5 - 2 = 9, so the last digit in 546 + 395 – 142 will also be a 9

Always look out for shortcuts: the 700s in 720 – 703 cancel each other out, making the answer the same as 20 - 3
700 + 300 = 1,000. keep your eyes peeled, looking for ways to break the problem up into smaller sums

Remember, 100s first, then 10s, then ones: 354 – 75 – 83 + 248 = (300 + 200) + (50 + 40 - 70 - 80) + (4 + 8 - 5 - 3) = (500) + (-60) + (4) = 444
7 + 6 - 8 = 5, so you know that the answer to 147 + 476 – 38 will also end with a 5
