Maths Quiz - Measures (Easy) (Answers)
1. Peter's car holds 40 litres (l) of petrol. If 1 gallon is the same as 4.55 litres (l), how many gallons does Peter's car hold?
[ ] 182 gal
[ ] 18.2 gal
[ ] 0.8 gal
[x] 8.8 gal
This is an imperial gallon. An American gallon = 3.78 litres (l). Don't fill up with American gallons!
2. How many grams are there in one-eighth of a kilogram?
[ ] 8 g
[x] 125 g
[ ] 8,000 g
[ ] 250 g
To find one-eighth of a number, divide the number by 8: 1,000 ÷ 8 = 125 g. The same procedure can be used with other fractions
3. If one inch equals 2.54 cm, how many centimetres are there in 12 inches?
[x] 30 cm
[ ] 3 cm
[ ] 4.7 cm
[ ] 300 cm
12 inches = 1 foot. If one inch equals 2.54 cm, then 12 inches = 12 × 2.54 = 30.48 cm
4. The length and width of a room are 4 m and 350 cm. What is the floor area of the room in square metres?
[x] 14 m2
[ ] 1,400 m2
[ ] 7.5 m2
[ ] 354 m2
Area = length × width BUT convert 350 cm to metres by dividing by 100 to give 3.5 m. Area = 4 × 3.5 = 14 m2. Dimensions (length, width and height) MUST be in the SAME UNITS
5. A cube has a side length of 7 cm. What is the volume of the cube?
[ ] 21 cm3
[ ] 14 cm3
[x] 343 cm3
[ ] 49 cm3
Volume = length × width × height = 7 × 7 × 7 = 343 cm3
6. If John drinks 4 pints of beer, how many litres does he drink? 1 pint = 586 ml
[ ] 146.5 litres
[ ] 0. 12 litres
[ ] 6.8 litres
[x] 2.3 litres
The 586 ml must be converted to litres by dividing by 1,000 to give 0.586 litres. If 1 pint = 586 ml, then 4 pints = 4 × 0.586 = 2.344 litres. This is an imperial pint. An American pint = 473 ml (liquid pint). Don't drink American pints!
7. When Maria was on holiday in the UK, she drove 211 miles on the M1 from London to York. If 1 mile equals 1.61 km, how many kilometres did she drive?
[ ] 131 km
[x] 340 km
[ ] 161 km
[ ] 3,400 km
If 1 mile equals 1.61 km, then 211 miles = 211 × 1.61 = 339.71 km
8. Farmer Giles's farm is 125 acres in size. If one acre equals 4,047 m2, how many square metres is his farm?
[ ] 50,588 m2
[x] 505,875 m2 (five hundred and five thousand eight hundred and seventy-five)
[ ] 162 m2
[ ] 550,875 m2 (five hundred and fifty thousand eight hundred and seventy-five)
If one acre equals 4,047 m2, then 125 acres = 125 × 4,047 = 505,875 m2
9. When Henry was on holiday in Europe, he drove 5,640 km in his car. If 1 mile = 1.61 km, how many miles did he drive?
[x] 3,503 m
[ ] 350 m
[ ] 9,080 m
[ ] 908 m
If 1 mile = 1.61 km, then 5,640 km = 5,640 ÷ 1.61 = 3,503.1 miles. You have to divide by 1.61 because you want to find out how many lots of 1.61 there are in 5,640: each 'lot' equals 1 mile
10. How many tonnes (t) is the same as 123,500 kg?
[ ] 12,350 t
[ ] 12.4 t
[ ] 1,235 t
[x] 123.5 t
1 tonne = 1 metric ton = 1,000 kg ? 123,500 kg = 123,500 ÷ 1,000 = 123.5 t. You have to divide by 1,000 because you want to find out how many 'lots' of 1,000 there are in 123,500: each 'lot' equals 1 tonne
