Congratulations on making it to the third of our Easy level Eleven Plus maths quizzes on Position. By now you should be quite familiar with the cardinal points on a compass: North, East, South and West, and also on the points which lie between them: NE, SE, SW and NW. Do you remember how many degrees lie between them?
There are 90° separating each of the cardinal points. 90° is one quarter of a rotation.
There are 45° separating the cardinal points from the points in between (e.g. between North and North-East). 45° is one eighth of a rotation.
It will help you in this quiz if you know your 9 times table. That’s because each quarter turn is 90°, so one full turn is 360° and you will know that 9 x 4 = 36. Things get a little trickier when dealing with 45° eighths of a turn. You might need a pencil and paper for some of these questions. Good luck.

Anticlockwise' means that you turn (rotate) in the opposite direction to which the hands of the clock turn: the hands of the clock turn 'clockwise'. 90° = one quarter turn from NE to NW
|
'Anticlockwise' means that you turn (rotate) in the opposite direction to which the hands of the clock turn: the hands of the clock turn 'clockwise'. 225° = 180° (one half turn, to NE) + 45° (one eighth of a turn, from NE to N)

135° = three lots of 45° or three-eighths of a rotation (turn): 45° is an eighth of a turn
|
315° = seven lots of 45° or seven-eighths of a rotation (turn): 45° is an eighth of a turn

It doesn't make any difference whether you turn clockwise or anticlockwise because you are making a half turn; this means that you will always end up facing the same way no matter which way you turn. If you don't believe it - turn around! D'oh!
|
To your left is another way of saying anticlockwise. 45° anticlockwise from NE is North. Look at the compass rose if you can't see this
|

Behind you will be 180° from SW, which is NE. Look at the compass rose if you can't see this
|
Jennifer turns through 135° (= three lots of 45°) and ends up facing E. Julie will have to turn anticlockwise through 45° (an eighth of a turn) from SE to E

Jim turns through 225° (= five lots of 45°) and ends up facing S. Bob will have to turn clockwise through 315° (seven-eighths of a turn) from SW to S.
45° anticlockwise would also work, and is simpler, but it wasn’t one of the available answers |
You would do yourself a favour by learning the points of the compass!
