So, you have made it to the fourth and final Questions About Words quiz – give yourself a pat on the back! As you will know by now, in the Eleven Plus verbal Reasoning exam, you may be asked how many consonants or vowels are in a list of words, or to arrange them alphabetically. We looked at vowels and consonants in the last quiz, so now let’s explain how to put words in alphabetical order.
The method is very simple, and I’m sure you already know it. Still, just in case…
And now let’s move on to the quiz. Please do not rush through the questions – you’d be surprised just how many people get simple questions like these wrong, all because they thought they were too easy. Good luck!

None of the words contain the letter ‘I’, but all the other vowels (A, E, O and U) appear at least once
‘G’ comes before ‘H’ and ‘W’ in the alphabet, so ‘glassy’ would come first in a dictionary

‘A’ appears four times - that’s more than any other vowel, so is the correct answer
Looking at the first letters of each word, ‘W’ comes after ‘G’ and ‘H’ in the alphabet, so the answer is either ‘washer’ or ‘warble’. Looking at their second letters, both have the letter ‘A’, so we move on to the third letter. ‘R’ comes before ‘S’ in the alphabet so ‘washer’ would appear last in a dictionary
‘S’ appears four times - that’s more than any other consonant (‘H’ and ‘R’ appear thrice, and ‘B’, ‘L’ and ‘W’ twice). ‘S’ is the correct answer
None of the words contain the letter ‘O’, but all the other vowels (A, E, I and U) appear at least once
‘C’ comes before ‘H’, ‘L’ and ‘T’ in the alphabet so ‘chitty’ will appear first in a dictionary
‘A’ appears four times – that’s more often than any other vowel
‘T’ comes later in the alphabet than ‘C’, ‘H’ and ‘L’ so ‘tautly’ would be listed last in a dictionary
‘T’ appears five times. That’s more than ‘L’ (four times), ‘H’ and ‘Y’ (three times), or ‘C’ (twice)
