Verbal Reasoning Quiz - Reading Information 4 (Answers)
1. Read the following statement, then choose the correct answer from the four choices available.

A group of friends is comparing how much pocket money they get each week. Elizabeth gets only half as much as Gerard, who gets £14 weekly, but she receives her pocket money daily. Dylan gets £3 per week more than Gerard. Joseph gets more than Elizabeth but less than Dylan. Using this information decide which of the following statements is true.
[ ] Dylan gets the least pocket money each week
[ ] Gerard gets the least pocket money each week
[ ] Joseph gets the least pocket money each week
[x] Elizabeth gets the least pocket money each week
If we use some basic Maths, we can work out what each child receives each week for pocket money. Gerard gets £14 per week. Dylan gets £17 per week (£3 more than Gerard). Elizabeth gets £7 per week. Joseph gets more than £7, but less than £17. So Elizabeth gets the least pocket money each week
2. Read the following statement, then choose the correct answer from the four choices available.

A group of children are comparing their birthdays. Joe was born on March 22nd 2003. Turlough is exactly 6 months younger than Stephen and exactly six months older than Sarah who was born on 22nd September 2004. Sarah is the youngest. Using this information decide which of the following statements is true.
[ ] Sarah was born on a Tuesday
[ ] Stephen and Joe were born on the same day
[ ] Turlough was born in September
[x] Joe is the oldest boy
This is because Turlough is 6 months younger than Stephen, who was born on September 22nd, 2003. Since Joe was born six months before this, he is the oldest boy
3. Read the following statement, then choose the correct answer from the four choices available.

Four children were playing 'heads' or 'tails' with a 2p coin and they scored 'heads' fourteen times. Dylan and Francis scored heads the same amount of times. Both Annette and Brendan scored heads three times. Using this information decide which of the following statements is true.
[ ] Dylan scored 'heads' more than Francis
[x] Francis scored 'heads' more than Annette
[ ] Brendan and Francis scored 'heads' the same amount of times
[ ] Annette scored 'heads' more than Dylan
This is because the scores were as follows: Brendan = 3 heads, Dylan = 4 heads, Francis = 4 heads, Annette = 3 heads. We know these scores because Brendan and Annette scored 3 each, totalling 6. 14 - 6 = 8, divided equally between Dylan and Francis. Francis definitely scored 4, which is more than Annette
4. Read the following statement, then choose the correct answer from the four choices available.

Cameron gets on the bus at 3.15pm and Eden gets on ten minutes later. Finlay is on the bus twenty minutes earlier than Eden. Joseph gets on the bus at 3.30pm. Using this information decide which of the following statements is true.
[ ] Cameron is on the bus first
[ ] Eden is on the bus last
[ ] Joseph was wearing a blue hat with a bobble
[x] Finlay is on the bus first
This is because the earliest person whose time we know is Cameron, at 3.15pm. Eden gets on the bus ten minutes later (3.25pm) and Joseph gets on at 3.30pm. Since Finlay is twenty minutes earlier than Eden, she must have boarded the bus 20 minutes before 3.25, at 3.05pm. Keen! And why would we know whether Joseph was wearing a hat, even such a nice one?
5. Read the following statement, then choose the correct answer from the four choices available.

Grace introduces a friend to her family. She tells her friend that Jose is Noah's uncle and that Sarah is Jose's niece. Grace also introduces her friend to her husband, Jose. Using this information decide which of the following statements is true.
[ ] Jose is Grace's uncle
[x] Grace is Sarah's aunt
[ ] Noah is Grace's brother
[ ] Jose is Noah's nephew
This is because Jose and Grace are married, and Sarah is Jose's niece. If you are someone's niece, they are your aunt!
6. Read the following statement, then choose the correct answer from the four choices available.

At a party, Mia is given £10.00, she is told to share it with Alyssa, Jacob and Justin. Mia takes half of the money and gives Jacob three pounds less than she takes for herself. Justin and Alyssa split the remaining amount of money equally. Using this information decide which of the following statements is true.
[ ] Jacob is given £3.00
[ ] Justin is given £2.50
[x] Alyssa is given £1.50
[ ] Mia is given £472,419.43
This is because Mia takes half (£5) for herself and gives Jacob £3 less than her, equalling £2. That leaves £3 left from the original £10 which is split between Justin and Alyssa who each get £1.50
7. Read the following statement, then choose the correct answer from the four choices available.
Mason's dad Ethan is 36 and Mason is a quarter of his dad's age. Natalie is four years older than Mason. Natalie's mum, Chloe, was 28 when Natalie was born. Using this information decide which of the following statements is true.
[ ] Chloe is 40
[ ] Chloe is 42
[ ] Chloe is 38
[x] Chloe is 41
This is because she was 28 when Natalie was born. We know when Natalie was born because she is 4 years older than Mason who is 9 (a quarter of his dad's age). 9 + 4 = 13. If Natalie is 13, her mum is 28 + 13 = 41
8. Read the following statement, then choose the correct answer from the four choices available.

At the fun fair Noah and William went on the dodgems, the roller coaster, the teacups and played with the water pistols. Lauren did half of the things that the boys did. Brianna did five more things than Lauren did. Using this information decide which of the following statements is true.
[ ] Noah did least activities
[ ] Lauren did as many activities as William
[x] Brianna did most activities
[ ] William did more activities than Brianna
This is because Lauren did 2 things (half of the four that the boys did) and Brianna did 5 more things than Lauren. 5 + 2 = 7. Those boys are a little too big for the teacups!
9. Read the following statement, then choose the correct answer from the four choices available.

At the school sports day, Anna ran the 100m sprint in 25 seconds. Jayden ran the same race but was two seconds slower than Anna. Jayden was four seconds faster than Ellen and six seconds faster than Liam. Using this information decide which of the following statements is true.
[ ] Liam was faster than Ellen
[ ] Ellen was faster than Jayden
[ ] Jayden was faster than Anna
[x] Anna was the fastest
This is because Jayden was 2 seconds slower than her, but she was faster than Ellen and Liam. This means all three were slower than Anna
