Lost in Translation

UK-and-US-Flags-Aug-17-BlogDuring the autumn and winter of 2016, Education Quizzes was a very busy bee, preparing for the majority of our UK quizzes to be copied to our American site. Talking of bees – I was given the task of being a busy spelling bee.

In order for our UK quizzes to make the transition to America seamlessly, we had to ensure they looked the part once they arrived. Which meant no more analysing (it’s analyzing), cheques (it’s checks), colouring (it’s coloring) or even bevvies (boohoo!) – (it’s bevies).

In addition, not only do some of our UK words get misspelt by Americans (I’m sure Americans feel the same way about our words too!), they also have completely different words for others. So as well as being a busy spelling bee, I was also tasked with the job of finding those words. Which meant no more candyfloss (cotton candy), car parks (parking lots), chemists (drugstores) or cling film (plastic/saran wrap).

I thought it would be a very easy job of finding a ginormous list on Wikipedia and simply copying/pasting. Not so. Whilst Wikipedia do list a number of different spellings, it’s by no means exhaustive – in fact it’s rather lacklustre.

In the end I found a handful of websites with differing lists. Then I spent an enjoyable evening with Graeme (who writes our Nature Matters blogs) thinking up words that the online lists had overlooked. The next day, I amalgamated them all into one mammoth spreadsheet. I ran it past Chris, our trusty American quiz-writer (who had a good giggle at a few of our differences), and once our website designers waved their magic wand over the whole thing, the job was done.

Of course, there are bound to be a few that have slipped through the reliable EQ net – but I’m sure our friends over the Pond will let me know about them via error reports!

If you are planning transferring UK English to USA English (or vice versa), feel free to use our list which is given at the end of this blog. Please be vigilant though if you are doing a ‘mass sweep’ using coding – some words are best left alone. Two such examples are:

Flat-Tyre-Aug-17Lift to elevator:

He took the elevator to the second floor’ is OK (except that ‘second floor’ is known as ‘third floor’ over there), but

He gave her a elevator into town’ is not.

Flat to apartment:

He bought a new apartment’ is OK, but

He got a apartment while giving her a elevator into town’ is not!

Likewise, some USA words shouldn’t come back the other way. These include crib (for cot), period (for full stop) and snap (for press stud). The main reason is these words have alternative meanings and therefore may render your work confusing at best and illegible at worst!

To see the complete list we made, press the ‘Readmore’ button below. In the meanwhile, if you have any other questions about education then you may find the answers in EQ’s Knowledge Bank. We have articles explaining some of the more obscure aspects of schooling alongside tips and advice for parents on all matters to do with raising children. It’s the place to go for on hand information!
