Primary School English Quiz - Adjectives 2 - Simple Adjectives (Questions)

In an earlier quiz we were introduced to adjectives as words that describe nouns and lend more meaning to sentences. Adjectives come in many types. They can be simple words that describe a noun, whether a person, an animal or an object. Any adjective that describes a noun can be termed as a simple adjective.

Simple adjectives can describe persons, animals or things and it is not that certain adjectives are reserved for different classes of nouns. For instance the adjective ‘good’ can be used to describe persons, animals, objects or even ideas. 'A good car,' 'a good person,' 'a good cat' and 'a good lecture' describe each of the nouns perfectly well. Equally, the adjective ‘bad’ can be used for all the nouns mentioned.

A simple adjective is usually used just before the noun. You will notice that the adjectives ‘good’ or ‘bad’ are used just before the noun.

Simple adjectives can be classified into many types grouped by ideas. For instance, if you were to group them under weather you could have ‘the blue sky’ or ‘the bright sky’ or ‘the warm climate’ or ‘the cold climate.’ Similarly, you could group the simple adjectives under state. 'Hard, soft, tidy' and 'empty' can be the simple adjectives under this grouping. When you group them under motion you could use 'fast' or 'slow'. 'Thirsty' or 'hungry' would be grouped under a person’s sensations. You could have simple adjectives such as 'expensive' or 'cheap' describing price and 'weak' and 'strong' describing power. Simple adjectives such as 'afraid,' 'brave' or 'sad' describe feelings and 'clever' or 'funny' describe a person’s qualities. Thus, you can have simple adjectives describing almost anything and probably, there is an adjective for every noun that is there in the English language!

The quiz that follows gives you an exposure to some of the simple adjectives that we encounter in our daily lives.
