Primary School English Quiz - Conjunctions 2 - Find the Conjunctions (Questions)

In the previous quiz we learnt that conjunctions, also known as joining words, are used to join two words, two sentences or two clauses. In this quiz we will learn more about the different types of conjunctions.

We need conjunctions to connect two simple sentences into one sentence so that it conveys more meaning. ‘I am shorter THAN her’ is a sentence in which THAN is used as a conjunction. Here, it is known as a subordinating conjunction.

To make it more clear consider the sentence ‘I wore my cap because it was hot.’ Here, ‘I wore my cap’ is an independent clause and by itself it means something. However, ‘because it was hot’ is another clause but by itself it does not mean much and is a dependent clause. When the two clauses are read in tandem then the sentence makes more sense and we can understand that I wore my cap because it was hot. The word ‘because’ here is used as a subordinating conjunction. AFTER, BECAUSE, HOW, SINCE and WHEN are some of the subordinating conjunctions that are commonly used.

Now consider another example: ‘I like Physics’ and ‘He likes Chemistry’ are two standalone sentences. If we combine the two and make it read ‘I like Physics, BUT he likes Chemistry’ then we read more meaning in the single sentence than with two independent sentences. BUT is the conjunction that joins the two sentences and it is known as a Coordinating Conjunction. Another simple example is the following. ‘I like tea.’ ‘I like coffee.’ The two sentences can be combined to read ‘I like tea AND coffee.’ Here, the single sentence makes much more sense because of its use of AND, which is known as a coordinating conjunction. The primary coordinating conjunctions are FOR, AND, NOR, BUT, OR, YET and SO.
