Primary School English Quiz - Pronouns 1 - Personal Pronouns (Questions)

Among the eight different parts of speech is an important category known as the pronoun. As the name suggests, it has something to do with nouns. A pronoun is a word used to replace a noun. The main purpose of the pronoun is to replace the noun and hence avoid repetitive use of a long lettered noun. For instance, let us say a person’s name is Vaidyanathapura. Imagine a paragraph where Vaidyanathapura is used in five sentences. Instead of using the name five times we can use the name once in the first sentence and replace with a pronoun such as HIM, HE or HIS depending upon the context in which the name is used in the remaining four sentences.

To illustrate with a simple example, look at these two sentences:

‘Vaidyanathapura lived in a small village in India and Vaidyanathapura was a smart boy.’

‘Vaidyanathapura lived in a small village in India and HE was a smart boy.’

The first sentence could be replaced by the second with no loss of meaning. The word 'Vaidyanathapura', a proper noun, is replaced by the word HE. HE is a pronoun. There are many other pronouns like HE and they are known as personal pronouns.

Personal pronouns are of two types, namely subject form and object form. Subject form pronouns replace nouns which are subjects:

‘Mustaq plays cricket’ can be replaced by

‘HE plays cricket.’

Object form pronouns replace nouns which are objects:

‘Mustaq owns a car’ can be replaced by

‘Mustaq owns IT.’

The personal pronouns in the subject form are I, YOU, HE, SHE, IT, WE and THEY. The personal pronouns in the object form are ME, YOU, HIM, HER, IT, US and THEM. You will notice from the list of personal pronouns that some of them are dependent on gender. In the case of the cricket example, if Mustaq is replaced by a girl whose name is Anamika, then the pronoun changes to SHE but in the other example of the car the pronoun IT is still the same. In the quiz that follows you will learn the correct usage of personal pronouns.

Primary School English Quiz - Pronouns 1 - Personal Pronouns (Answers)
1. "---- is sitting on the wall." - Fill in the blank with the correct pronoun.
[ ] They
[ ] Them
[x] He
[ ] We
The options other than 'He' refer to the plural while the sentence begs for a pronoun to fit in with its singular nature
2. "Our friend returned the apples to ----." - Fill in the blank with the correct pronoun.
[ ] It
[ ] They
[ ] I
[x] Us
'It' refers to a thing and cannot be used for a person. 'They' and 'I' are not the proper usage forms. 'Them' and 'Me' would also have been correct
3. "---like to swim in the pool." - Fill in the blank with the correct pronoun.
[x] I
[ ] Me
[ ] Us
[ ] Her
'Me' is the wrong usage for the sentence. 'Us' and 'Her' are also wrong
4. "Balu wants to take --- to --- room." - Fill in the blanks with the correct pronouns.
[x] Them, His
[ ] They, Us
[ ] We, They
[ ] I, Us
Looking at the context of the sentence the other options would be the wrong usage
5. "If --- have erred, punish ---" - Fill in the blanks with the correct pronouns.
[ ] Us, They
[ ] Me, I
[x] I, Me
[ ] Her, I
'We, Us' would have worked equally well were it one of the options
6. "As soon as the mouse spotted the cat, --- ran away." - Fill in the blank with the correct pronoun.
[x] It
[ ] Them
[ ] Her
[ ] Him
The pronoun for an animal is usually either 'It' or 'They'
7. "Give the notebook back, --- belongs to ---." - Fill in the blanks with the correct pronouns.
[x] It, Me
[ ] Them, They
[ ] Her, I
[ ] Him, It
'Them' and 'They' are for plurals while the sentence calls for singulars. 'Her' and 'Him' refer to persons, which a notebook is not!
8. "The phone message said that --- have to phone --- in the night." - Fill in the blanks with the correct pronouns.
[ ] Us, They
[x] I, You
[ ] Her, I
[ ] Him, It
'We, Them' would also have been correct if it had been one of the options
9. "Sunita’s homework was due the next day so --- stayed up late to complete ---" - Fill in the blanks with the correct pronouns.
[ ] Us, They
[ ] Them, Her
[x] She, It
[ ] Him, You
Sunita is a girl and so the correct pronoun for Sunita is 'She'
10. "Navneet must take --- around the city when they visit ---." - Fill in the blanks with the correct pronouns.
[ ] It, They
[ ] They, I
[ ] Her, Them
[x] Them, Her
Since Sunita is a girl, the second blank has to be filled by the pronoun 'Her'
