Lord Vishnu is believed to have taken on nine incarnations or avatars before now. The tenth and final avatar will descend to Earth at the end of the Kali Yuga (the last of the four stages the world will go through as part of the cycle of yugas). These ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu are collectively known as the Dashavatar.
The first three avatars descended to Earth during the Sat Yuga, the next three in the Treta Yuga, the seventh and eight incarnations appeared in the Dwapara Yuga, the ninth appeared in the Kali Yuga which began in 3102 BC, and the tenth avatar is expected to appear at the end of the Kali Yuga.
