“The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens”, taught Bahá'u'lláh. In this vein Bahá’ís have always been strong supporters of global collaborative activities, particularly the League of Nations and the UNO. The Bahá’í International Community was granted consultative status with the League in the 1930s and with the UNO from the 1940s.

Every National Spiritual Assembly, of which there are 180, is an affiliate.

Non-Governmental Organisations may not be affiliates of the Security Council, which is the province of states. Within bodies concerned with human rights and economic and social issues, however, there is a lot which religious people can contribute.

The Bahá’ís are seen as a very valuable NGO, since they have local communities all over the world which can be mobilised in support of UN programmes.

There are currently between 5 and 6 million Bahá’ís in the world.

The House of Bahá’u’lláh was seized illegally, and the Iraqi authorities gave no indication of a willingness to restore the house, so the Bahá’ís took their case to the League, Iraq not being a colony but a mandate from the League.

This document was part of a broad movement for a review of the UNO for the year 2000. As well as suggestions for charter revisions, it laid great emphasis on the elimination of violence against women, the strengthening of human rights legislation and similar matters.
