Galatians takes a look at Paul’s thoughts on Jewish Law.
The fourth Epistle, and the ninth book in the New Testament, is Paul's letter to the Church in Galatia; Galatians. It was written around 49 AD and addressed Paul's concerns that some Christians were saying that Jewish Law must be observed. Paul opposed this and said in his letter that faith in Christ alone is the only requirement of being a Christian. He also warned of the terrible results of failure to believe in the pure Gospel of Christ.

Galatians 1:18-19
"Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord’s brother." The transformation in Paul was remarkable. Before his conversion he had been a bitter enemy of the Christians |

Peter could see that God had chosen Paul to spread the Gospel to the Gentiles, whilst he himself was to preach to the Jews.
Galatians 2:7-10 "but contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter; (for he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:) and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do" |
Paul saw Peter acting as a Jew amongst Jews, and as a Gentile amongst Gentiles. Paul saw this as hypocrisy and spoke out against Peter.
Galatians 2:19-21 "For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain" |

If the Jewish Laws could save us from sin then there would have been no need for Jesus to come; salvation would be found in the scriptures. Rather than salvation, the Laws offer us teaching and guidance.
Galatians 3:21-25 "Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster" |
There are no longer any differences between us as we are all united in Christ.
Galatians 3:26-28 "For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus" |

Ishmael and Isaac were both sons of Abraham, but Ishmael was born to a slave mother, Hagar, and Isaac to a free woman, Sarah. Paul says that Jews are like Ishmael, slaves to the Law; but Christians are like Isaac, free through Christ.
Galatians 4:28-31 "Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free" |
We have been given freedom through Christ, but not freedom to do wrong; freedom to love and to serve one another.
Galatians 5:13-15 "For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another" |

Through the Holy Spirit such things are replaced with self control.
Galatians 5:22-26 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another" |
Galatians 6:11-18
"Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand. As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh. But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen. Unto the Galatians written from Rome" |
Galatians 1:8-9
"But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed"
