Romans is the first of the Epistles.

After the five Historical Books of the New Testament, the Bible continues with the Epistles. These are letters written to teach and instruct Christian doctrine. The first nine of the Epistles were written by Saint Paul, and the first is called Romans. It was written whilst Paul was in the Greek city of Corinth, around 56 AD, to the Christians in Rome, a place Paul had not yet visited. 1. Paul says that all are accountable to God for their sins, even those who have not been taught about Judaism or Jesus. He says that those who do not believe in God think themselves to be what?
[ ] Lords of creation
[ ] Immortal
[x] Wise

God has put knowledge of Himself into the hearts of all men. Those who do not see Him think themselves wise, but are in fact, foolish.

Romans 1:18-22
"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools"
2. According to Paul, what is the purpose of the Jewish Laws?
[x] To show us that we are sinners
[ ] To reveal God to us
[ ] To show us how to avoid sin
[ ] To prophesy Jesus coming
Even those who try to keep the Jewish laws are sinners because everyone has failed. Now God has given us a new way to Him. Faith in Jesus Christ will remove our sins.

Romans 3:20-23
"Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God"

Romans 5:3-5
"And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope: and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us"
4. Paul talks about the consequences of a sinful life. He says what, is the wages of sin?
[ ] Purgatory
[ ] Hellfire

The sins which the believers used to do made them ashamed to look back on, but now that they have found Jesus they will live forever.

Romans 6:20-23
"For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord"
5. Paul says that the spirit of Jesus Christ has saved His followers from condemnation. They live through His spirit rather than through what thing which causes sin?
[ ] The mind

[ ] The eye
Paul says that the sinful nature of the flesh is broken when we live through the Holy Spirit .

Romans 8:1-4
"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit"
6. We don't know how to pray, or what to pray for, says Paul, but we need not worry because somebody else is praying for us. Who is it?
[ ] Jesus
[ ] Moses
[x] The Holy Spirit
[ ] Mary, mother of God
If we love God we can be sure that everything which happens to us is for our own good.

Romans 8:26-28
"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose"

For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen"
8. Paul tells us to present what, as a living sacrifice to God?
[x] Our bodies

[ ] Our spirit
[ ] A goat
Romans 12:1-2
"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

What Paul wants us to do is devote our everyday life to God, in everything we do. We should not be corrupted by those around us but keep our mind on doing God's will. That will bring out the best in us
9. One of the Ten Commandments tells us to love our neighbour. What does Paul say we should do to our enemies?
[ ] Feed them
[ ] Not get angry with them
[ ] Give them drink

We should love everyone; even our enemies. It is God's place to judge; not ours.

Romans 12:17-21
"Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good"
10. Paul tells us that we should obey who, because God gave them their power?
[ ] The Jewish Laws
[x] The government
[ ] The priests
[ ] The bishops

Romans 13:1-5
"Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: for he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake"
