Upper Primary School English Quiz - Spelling 04 - Words ending with TION (Questions)

Spellings are vital to written English and pronunciation is vital to spoken English. An understanding of spelling and pronunciation enhances the quality of our communication with others. Sometimes pronunciation plays an important part in adding to the spelling of a word. By using the pronunciation route we create new words that help to add to our vocabulary.

We have read about prefixes and suffixes that allow us to form new words from base words. From a combination of pronunciation and suffixes we create a new class of words that end with the letters TION. For instance, the word INTERCEPTION is derived from the word INTERCEPT by simply adding the suffix ION. You will notice that the pronunciation ends with the ‘SHUN’ sound.

Many such words can be formed from base words which are normally verbs. There are certain rules that are followed:

[readmore]For words that end in T, such as ACT, you just add ION to form ACTION.

For words that end in E, such as INTERVENE, you remove the E and add TION to form INTERVENTION.

In some cases, such as ADD, you need to add an additional I before TION to form ADDITION.

In some other words, such as MODIFY, you need to add a few more letters to make the word MODIFICATION.

The suffix TION lends a particular charm to the new words it forms and the language is much the richer because of them. The quiz you are about to take will expose you to a new set of words that end in TION.
