Are you conscious of your conscience? Practise spelling words beginning at cons in this KS3 quiz.
"Take care that you never spell a word wrong. Always before you write a word, consider how it is spelled, and, if you do not remember, turn to a dictionary. It produces great praise to a lady to spell well." - Thomas Jefferson to his daughter.
Well, ladies, you heard the man! It is true that people often judge spelling mistakes harshly, assuming that the person making the mistake is careless, ignorant, or ill-read. Somehow spelling mistakes take on a much greater significance than perhaps they should. English, as you already know, is very frequently not spelled phonetically and it takes enormous powers of memory to spell without errors. While it is not necessarily good for your writing to pause and consider each word, as Jefferson recommends, it is true that regular practice will improve your spelling. Whether it is especially ladylike to spell well might be a question better left to Jefferson's era and social milieu.
