Spellcheck has made spelling much easier than it was in the days prior to word processors. Those of us who accidentally type "hte" when in a hurry know that spellcheck will replace the typo with the correct spelling "the". It's reassuring to know that such silly mistakes caused through carelessness or haste will be corrected.

Such tools can be helpful, but they can also be a hindrance, especially when search engines and spellchecks are set to another version of English (correcting a word such as "traveller" to the American "traveler", for example). They also fail to catch errors like transposed letters, if you were to mistakenly type "brain" when you meant "Brian", or when you confuse "they're", "their" and "there". So, for these reasons, it's good to think of spellcheck as a useful tool, but also to work on improving your own spelling.
