"Poetry is but another form of inquiry into the nature of phenomena, using its own unique procedures and tools." - John Barton.

Do you ever get confused between "enquiry" and "inquiry"? Sometimes people will insist that one spelling holds one meaning while the other spelling should be used for an alternate meaning. Really, however, this word, with its two correct spellings, illustrates how spelling conventions work. The word derives from the Latin, inquaerere. The problem is that Latin itself changed over time and the languages which developed from Latin, such as French, Spanish and Italian, also changed. Enquere, the French form of the word, changed the i to an e.

So "enquiry" arrived in English from French. But others using the word in English conformed to the Latin spelling and kept the i. Correct spelling is often a negotiation, with different forms of a single word often being considered correct. Sometimes a particular spelling will fall out of fashion, or an older spelling will be revived. Luckily, spelling changes take time, or how could anyone keep up?

Practise (or is it practice?) your spellings with this quiz.
