"I started by looking everything up in a Star Trek dictionary so I knew what I was talking about, but you can't do that because they talk in circles, and half of it doesn't make sense, so you'll just end up driving yourself more insane." - Jeri Ryan.

How often do you use a dictionary? You probably have a good collection of dictionaries at school; perhaps you even have a hard copy of the dictionary at home.

Dictionaries can be pocket-sized, with only the most common words contained in them, or they can be several volumes, with the aim of containing all known words of a language. Online dictionaries are less limited for space and can contain a great number of words. Some dictionaries exist to help speakers of one language to translate words from another language.

We often think of dictionaries as helping us to know the correct definition of a word. This is true to some extent, otherwise how could one possibly understand a word such as "pusillanimous"? But dictionaries also record the meanings of words as people actually use them, which means they show how language changes over time. As you should know, if you've been working your way through this set of spelling quizzes, that historical change includes spelling, too!
