English Quiz - Synonyms 03 (Questions)

Strange as it may seem, did you know that odd and strange are synonyms? To enrich your vocabulary, use synonyms. Be bold and brave by not overusing the same word repeatedly!

Synonyms are similar rather than identical. This means that by choosing words carefully you can express exactly the meaning you want. For example, you might have been introduced to multiple synonyms for "said" in one of your English lessons. One of the reasons for learning lists of words you might use as replacements for "said" is because it can become boring reading the same word over and over again. But another reason for learning synonyms for "said" is to make your writing more effective. "Perform", "utter", "deliver", "relate" and "report" each create a different impression on the reader. If I "deliver" a speech, the effect of the word is fairly neutral. If I "perform" my speech, on the other hand, you might think that I've put more effort into it, or that I don't believe everything I say, or even that the speech was especially powerful. Compare the effect of the word "perform" with "said". If I merely "said" my speech, you might think I didn't make much of an effort or that I didn't care at all about it! Learn synonyms to improve your writing.
