This KS3 ICT quiz takes a look at web publishing. The internet was developed during the 1960s to the 1980s. It allowed military and academic establishments to share files and send electronic mail. By the end of the 1980s, business networks were also linked to the internet and it was possible to send electronic mail between offices in different locations. This allowed for better communications for trans-national companies. If you wanted to get information via the internet, you needed access to the specific network where the data was stored.
The World Wide Web was developed by a computer scientist in 1989 and the first website was put on line in 1991. He worked out a way of joining together several different computer technologies that could be accessed through the internet. This was a revolutionary development. Within just a few years, anyone could publish information that could be accessed from anywhere in the world. Instead of needing to be a member of a specific network, the information on the World Wide Web was available to anyone with a web browser and an internet connection.
