Education-Quizzes-Molecular-BondsUnderstanding what children learn at school

Education has changed quite a bit since we went to school! In the 1980s I was taught that Pluto is a planet and that ‘zero’ was what Americans said instead of ‘nought’. Blackboards were at the front of every classroom and computers were a specialist subject taught after school (I’m giving my age away now!). So, when we try to help our children with their schoolwork we might end up confused – or worse still – we might confuse them!

Can you tell me the answer to this problem: 3 + 4 x 2 = ? Do it on a calculator and the answer is 14 which may seem correct but is actually wrong! The correct answer is 11. Why? Because of BODMAS.

BODMAS is just one of the things taught in schools today that you might not be familiar with. To help you to help your child, this section of “Parents 999” explains the details of some unfamiliar topics.

If you find yourself at a loss when looking at your child’s schoolwork then Subject Knowledge is your first port of call. Look down the list for the subject you are after, then click on ‘Play. You will find an in-depth article which should make things clear, followed by an interactive quiz to see how well you have taken the information in.

Subject Knowledge will continue to be updated with articles written by those in-the-know. If the topic you want covered is not here, get in touch with us at Education Quizzes and we’ll endeavour to add it as soon as possible.
