Spanish Difficult Review Quiz - Grammar - Superlative Adverbs (Questions)

In this quiz you will once again be learning about adverbs. In fact, this Spanish Difficult Review quiz will take a look at the superlative adverbs.

As you have previously learned, there are many different types of adverbs. You learned that adverbs that end with the letters 'ly' in English and 'mente' in Spanish are known as 'Adverbs of Manner'. You also learned that adverbs that end with the letters 'er' in English are adverbs that indicate that something has more or less of a quantity or quality. This adverb is known as the 'Comparative Adverb'. That is because two or more things are being compared to each other. In order to show this in Spanish, the words más (more) or menos (less / minus) are placed before the noun, adverb or adjective that is being compared, i.e., big house (grande casa) becomes a bigger house (más grande casa). Now you are about to learn about adverbs that show the most.

THE SUPERLATIVE ADVERBS

In English, when something is 'the most', it is demonstrated by ending a word with the letters 'est'. This would then be the biggest house (la más grande casa). Adverbs that show the most are known as 'Superlative Adverbs'.

Did you notice that the Superlative Adverbs also use the Spanish words of más or menos? However, to distinguish them from the Comparative Adverbs the definite article is placed before más or menos when the Superlative Adverbs are used.

EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE

Once again when it comes to Spanish there are always exceptions to the rule. So too with Superlative Adverbs and Comparative Adverbs because there are a few irregular adverbs. Two such words are 'good' (bueno) and 'bad' (malo). In the Superlative and Comparative forms, 'good' becomes 'mejor' and 'bad' becomes 'peor'. For example:

GOOD

ENGLISH SPANISH
The car is good. El coche es bueno.
The car is better. El coche es mejor.
The car is the best. El coche es el mejor.

BAD

ENGLISH SPANISH
The car is bad. El coche es malo.
The car is worse. El coche es peor.
The car is the worst. El coche es el peor.

Remember to pay attention to when the definite article is used and when it is not used because it DOES make a difference.

Spanish Difficult Review Quiz - Grammar - Superlative Adverbs (Answers)
1. My uncle is rich!
[x] ¡Mi tío es el más rico!
[ ] ¡Mi tío es más rico!
[ ] Mi tío es el más rico!
[ ] ¡Mi tía es el más rico!
The noun in this sentence is uncle. The last answer shows it as being aunt so it is not correct. The second answer reads: My uncle is richer. That is not the superlative form of the sentence that you are looking for. The first and third answers look to be the same. However, when the sentence is an exclamation, there needs to be an exclamation point before and after the sentence. This is missing in the third answer. The first answer reads: My uncle is the richest! It is the correct answer
2. The team was fast.
[ ] El equipo fue rápido.
[ ] El equipo fue más rápido.
[x] El equipo fue el más rápido.
[ ] El equipo no fue el más rápido.
The first answer has correctly translated the given sentence. However, it does not show the superlative form of the sentence. The second answer reads: The team was faster. That is the comparative form and not the superlative form. The last answer reads: The team was not the fastest. You were not asked to make the sentence into a negative so it, too, is not correct. The third answer reads: The team was the fastest. It is the correct answer.
3. The ocean is deep.
[ ] El océano es más profundo.
[x] El océano es el más profundo.
[ ] El océano es profundo.
[ ] El oceano es el más profundo.
The third answer reads: The ocean is deep. However, it is not in the superlative form so it is not correct. The first answer reads: The ocean is deeper. This is in the comparative form and not the superlative form. The last answer is missing an accent mark on the word ocean making the answer incorrect. The second answer reads: The ocean is the deepest. It is the correct answer.
4. Carol and Stacy were late.
[ ] Carol y Stacy fueron tarde.
[ ] Carol y Stacy fueron más tarde.
[ ] Carol e Stacy fueron más tarde.
[x] Carol y Stacy fueron las más tarde.
The first answer is the correct translation of the given sentence but it does not show the superlative form of the sentence. The second answer reads: Carol and Stacy were later. This is showing the comparative form and not the superlative form. The third answer, although it reads: Carol and Stacy were late, it does not show the superlative form and it has incorrectly changed the 'y' to an 'e'. The rule is that the 'y' becomes and 'e' when the first word proceeding it begins with the letter 'i'. That is not the case here. The last answer reads: Carol and Stacy were the latest. That is the correct answer.
5. The city is young.
[ ] La ciudad es más joven.
[ ] La ciudad es joven.
[x] La ciudad es el más joven.
[ ] La ciudad es el más mejor.
The second answer is the correct translation of the given sentence but it does not show the superlative form. The first answer reads: The city is younger. This is the comparative form and not the superlative form. The last answer reads: The city is the best. This is in the superlative form but it is not the correct adverb. The third answer reads: The city is the youngest. It is the correct answer.
6. The food was bad.
[x] La comida fue la peor.
[ ] La comida fue peor.
[ ] La comida fueron peor.
[ ] La comida fue mala.
The last answer shows the correct translation of the given sentence but it does not show the superlative form. The second answer reads: The food was worse. This is the comparative form of the sentence. The third answer shows the verb with the wrong pronoun ending. The pronoun that can replace the food is 'it' or 'lo' which is singular. The third answer shows 'they were' which is not correct. The first answer reads: The food was the worst. This is the superlative form.
7. The moon is far.
[ ] La luna está más cercana.
[x] La luna es el más lejos.
[ ] La luna es lejos.
[ ] La luna es la más cercana.
The third answer is the correct translation of the given sentence but it is not in the superlative form. The first answer reads: The moon is closer. It is in the comparative form and it is the wrong adverb. The last answer reads: The moon is the closets. It is in the superlative form but it is the wrong adverb. The second answer reads: The moon is the furthest. It is the correct answer.
8. Allison is sick.
[ ] Allison está enferma.
[ ] Allison está la más enfermo.
[ ] Allison está más enferma.
[x] Allison está la más enferma.
The first answer is the correct translation of the given sentence but it is not in the superlative form. The second answer has used the masculine form for sick rather than the feminine form which would go with Allison. The third answer reads: Allison is sicker. This is the comparative form. The last answer reads: Allison is the sickest. It is the correct answer.
9. Grandmother is bright.
[ ] Abuela es la mas brillante.
[ ] Abuela es más brillante.
[x] Abuela es la más brillante.
[ ] Abuela es brillante.
The last answer shows the correct translation of the given sentence but it is not in the superlative form. The first answer is missing an accent mark above the 'a' in más making it incorrect. The second answer reads: Grandmother is brighter. That is the comparative form. The third answer reads: Grandmother is the brightest. It is the correct answer.
10. Daddy is jealous.
[x] Papá es el más celoso.
[ ] Papá es más celoso.
[ ] Papá es el más bromista.
[ ] Papá es celoso.
The last answer shows the correct translation of the give sentence but it is not in the superlative form. The second answer reads: Daddy is more jealous. This is in the comparative form. The third answer reads: Daddy is the most joker. This is not the correct adverb. The first answer reads: Daddy is the most jealous. That is the correct answer. Notice that in this case the letters 'est' are not part of the superlative form. Using the words more or most or less or least are also parts of the superlative form.
