Spanish Easy Review Quiz - Writing - Spanish to English (1) (Answers)
1. Cristina ama su hermano.
[ ] Christine has a brother.
[x] Christine loves her brother.
[ ] Christine visits her brother.
[ ] Christine asks her brother.
Each answer has correctly translated Cristina as Christine. In addition, each answer has correctly translated hermano as brother. The Spanish possessive pronoun su in this sentences means her. The first answer does not contain the possessive pronoun so it is not translated correctly. The Spanish word ama is the verb loves. This now tells you that the second answer is the correct translation of the given Spanish sentence.
2. Guillermo ve un venado.
[x] William sees a deer.
[ ] William sees a vehicle.
[ ] William sees a lamb.
[ ] William sees a raccooon.
Each answer has correctly translated Guillermo as William. In addition, each answer has correctly translated ve as sees and un as a. That leaves the word venado. Venado is the Spanish word for deer. This now tells you that the first answer is the correct translation.
3. Padre vende helicópteros.
[ ] Father flies helicopters.
[ ] Peter flies helicopters.
[x] Father sells helicopters.
[ ] Peter sells helicopters.
The Spanish word padre means father. This now tells you that the second and last answers can be eliminated as the Spanish word for Peter is Pedro. Each answer does show the correct translation of helicopters. That leaves vende. Vende is Spanish for sells. This now tells you that the third answer is the correct translation of the given Spanish sentence.
4. El bombero está a la puerta.
[ ] The man is at the door.
[ ] The brother is at the port.
[ ] The businessman is at the port.
[x] The fireman is at the door.
The verb in this sentence is está. It is derived from the Spanish verb estar which means to be and it is the to be verb used in a temporary condition. The words a la mean at the. Each answer has translated them correctly. Puerta is Spanish for door. This means that the second and third answers can now be eliminated. The Spanish words el bombero mean the fireman.
5. Ella dice a su abuela.
[ ] She decides for her grandmother.
[ ] She deals to her grandmother.
[x] She tells her grandmother.
[ ] She dictates to her grandmother.
The Spanish word ella means she and it has been translated correctly in each answer. The Spanish word abuela mean grandmother and the Spanish possessive pronoun su means her. Together it translates as, her grandmother. Again, each answer has translated this correctly. Notice now the word 'a'. It is not used as the 'a' is in English. In Spanish it means 'to' or 'at'. It does not mean 'for' so you can eliminate the first answer. You will often see the 'a' used in written Spanish (and hear it in spoken Spanish). The verb here is dice and it is Spanish for tells. If translated accurately, the given sentence would read: She tells to her grandmother. However, the word 'to' is not used in this manner in English so it is dropped from the English translation. This means that the English translation will read: She tells her grandmother.
6. Ellos duermen en las camas.
[ ] They drive on the streets.
[x] They sleep in the beds.
[ ] They ride on the camels.
[ ] They smile in the camera.
Each answer has correctly translated ellos as they. The Spanish word en can be translated as either on or in depending upon the context of the sentence. Each answer provided a different translation of the words duermen and camas. The Spanish word for duermen is sleep and camas is beds.
7. Está caliente.
[x] It is hot.
[ ] It is cold.
[ ] It is calm.
[ ] It is quiet.
The Spanish word está is the verb is (temporary condition). Therefore, to get the correct translation, you must know what the word caliente means. Caliente is Spanish for hot.
8. Estudiamos francés.
[ ] We understand French.
[ ] We translate French.
[ ] We speak French.
[x] We study French.
Each answer has properly translated francés as meaning French. In addition, each answer has understood that the verb form is related to the pronoun we. Estudiamos is Spanish for we study.
9. Corre al este.
[ ] He cries to the sheep.
[ ] He carries all things.
[x] He runs to the east.
[ ] He cooks the eggs.
In Spanish, when a sentence would contain the words 'de' (of) and 'el' (the) beside each other, they are combined to make the word 'del' (of the). This holds true when the words 'a' (to/at) and 'el' (the) are beside each other. They combine to become 'al' (to the). The second and last answers do not show the correct translation for 'al' so they can be eliminated. The Spanish word corre means he runs and este means east. The correct translation of the given sentence is: He runs to the east.
10. Ella compra una blusa.
[ ] She completes a blouse.
[x] She buys a blouse.
[ ] She irons a blouse.
[ ] She compares a blouse.
The Spanish pronoun ella (she) has been correctly translated in each answer. In addition, una blusa is Spanish for a blouse. This too has been translated correctly in each answer. That leaves the Spanish word compra. Compra means buys. The correct English translation is: She buys a blouse.
