There are some words that, when we say they have happened already, completely change. If I bite you, I’m doing it now but if I did it yesterday, then I bit you. The word ‘bite’ changes to ‘bit’. There are a few words that change like this and they are called irregular past tenses.

Irregular means unusual. Often to show past tense we can add 'ed' to show that it has already happened. However, some verbs change a letter or letters to show it has moved from present to past tense.

Become is the present tense and became is the past. Bit is the past tense of bite and broke is the past tense of break.

The woman in the picture fell over but if she is doing it now then she is falling. The present tense of chose is choose and drive becomes drove.

He hides in the bin, so yesterday he hid in the bin. If I hold you now, tomorrow I held you. Finally, the past tense of feel is felt.

The woman will lose her way if she doesn't use the map. She didn't...and now she is lost! The present tense is leave and past tense changes it to left. Also, you may sit now but if you have already done it, then you sat.
