This would help teachers understand if their students are reading with accuracy, the appropriate rate and with expression. Students can explain how they can pronounce words with accuracy as well as explain how to express a portion of the short story. In this quiz, students will read both a piece of prose and poetry and answer questions about how they would read it orally with expression and accuracy.

Story 1 - Two Brothers

Ben and Jeff are two brothers. Ben is a few years older than Jeff. Ben has invited some friends to camp out in his backyard. Ben and his friends are trying to earn a scout camping badge. His scout leader told the boys that they would have to camp out overnight without parents. They must learn to sleep out under the stars.

As Ben and his friends are setting up the tent, Jeff comes outside. “Do you need any help? I am good with a tent.”

“No, go away!” Ben and his friends tell Jeff. Jeff is upset. He quickly leaves to go back in the house. Before he gets to the door, Ben yells after him.

“Wait Jeff. Go get us some food and bring it to us now.” Jeff shakes his head and goes back into the kitchen. He gets the food for Ben, but he doesn’t like how he is being treated. He has an idea, but first he takes the food back to Ben.

After a few hours, Ben and his friends are in the tent. Ben’s parents have gone to bed and it is very dark outside.

“Did you hear something?” Ben’s friend asks. The three boys listen carefully. They start to get scared because they keep hearing a crunching sound. Their eyes get wide. All of a sudden, Jeff jumps into the tent. The three boys jump and scream in fear. Jeff laughs.

Poem 2 - Moon Landing Poem

In 1969, three astronauts went into space
They looked around but were out of place

Landing on the moon in Apollo 11
They were far away, it could have been heaven

The astronauts, Neil, Michael and Buzz
Landed on the moon to see what it does

This was the first moon landing of all
Because the U.S. made this call

Buzz stepped out with Neil before him
And they looked at the moon around them

Neil said, "That’s one small step for man."
He said this as they both would land

"One giant leap for mankind."
Then they returned to earth just fine
