Let’s look at the following sentence: “The water is cold.” In this sentence we know that the “water” is a common noun. What can we learn about the water in this sentence? We learn that it is “cold”. “Cold” is an adjective as it describes the water.

Let’s once again look at the sentence “The water is cold.” Only now we will say, “The water is cold and blue.” The two adjectives that describe the water are that it is “cold” and it is “blue.”

Now let’s rework that sentence in another way. “The cold, blue water was everywhere.” This time the two adjectives came before the noun. Generally, when the adjectives come before the noun a comma is used between them (cold, blue). When they come after the noun, the word “and” is used between them (cold and blue).

English Language: Middle School: Grades 6, 7 and 8 Quiz - Adjectives - Coordinate (Answers)
1. For the sentence below, find the correct coordinate adjectives that would best describe the noun.

The smell of the ____________ buns was heavenly.
[ ] grape, fruit
[ ] happy, funny
[x] hot, sticky
[ ] wicked and crazy
As an adjective describes a noun or pronoun, two adjectives that describe the same noun are called coordinate adjectives. As the noun here is “buns” the answer that best describes the buns are “hot” and “sticky” so Answer (c) is correct
2. For the sentence below, find the correct coordinate adjectives that would best describe the noun.

His algebra test was both ______ and ______.
[x] hard and long
[ ] confusing and simple
[ ] white and black
[ ] math and economics
Coordinate adjectives are two adjectives that describe a common noun. In this sentence the common noun is test. The two adjectives that best describe the test in this sentence would be “hard” and “long.” Therefore, Answer (a) is the correct answer
3. For the sentence below, find the correct coordinate adjectives that would best describe the noun.

My father loves to drive on _____________ roads in the mountains.
[ ] slippery, terrain
[ ] winter, crooked
[ ] hidden, open
[x] narrow, windy
The first thing we need to find is the noun that is being described. In this sentence it is the word “roads.” Which of the answers best describes the roads? A good way to determine if words are coordinate adjectives is to put the word “and” in between them. If the sentence makes sense, then they are the correct coordinate adjectives. On the other hand, if the sentence does not make sense, then they are being used in the wrong convention. So, drive on “slippery and terrain” roads does not make sense. Neither does drive on “winter and crooked” roads nor “hidden and open” roads. However, drive on “narrow and windy” roads does so Answer (d) is the correct coordinate adjectives we need here
4. For the sentence below, find the correct coordinate adjectives that would best describe the noun.

Every dress she found in the old trunk was ______ and _____.
[ ] grimy and happy
[ ] friction and elastic
[x] stained and tattered
[ ] borrowed and broken
Although clothing can be “grimy,” it is highly unlikely that it would be “happy” so Answer (a) is clearly not the correct coordinate adjectives needed in this sentence. Answer (b), friction and elastic, would not make any sense in describing the dresses so it is not correct. Again, the dresses could be borrowed but they would not be broken so Answer (d) is also not correct. However, the dresses could be “stained” and “tattered.” Therefore, Answer (c) would be the perfect coordinate adjectives needed for this sentence
5. For the sentence below, find the correct coordinate adjectives that would best describe the noun.

The band played a ____________ melody that kept the audience spellbound.
[ ] quick, step
[x] beautiful, haunting
[ ] fast, piece
[ ] silent, questioning
A good way to determine if words are coordinate adjectives is to put the word “and” in between them. If the sentence makes sense, then they are the correct coordinate adjectives. On the other hand, if the sentence does not make sense, then they are being used in the wrong convention. So, played a “quick and step” melody does not make sense. Played a “fast and piece” melody and played a “silent and questioning” melody do not make any sense either. It is unlikely that music would be “silent.” However, played a “beautiful and haunting” melody makes perfect sense. As such, Answer (b) is the correct coordinate adjectives needed in this sentence
6. For the sentence below, find the correct coordinate adjectives that would best describe the noun.

The winters in the north can be very ______ and _____.
[x] cold and snowy
[ ] warm and freezing
[ ] long and northern
[ ] subtle and treacherous
The first thing we need to find is the noun that is being described. In this sentence it is the word “winters.” Which of the answers given will best describe the winters? “Warm and freezing” do not make any sense because something cannot be both as these are opposite conditions. Rather than using the conjunction “and,” the conjunction “or” would fit in here as the winters could be either “warm or freezing.” In this case, “warm” and “freezing” would not be coordinate adjectives. The word “long” and “northern” can both be used as adjectives but do not make sense in this sentence, nor do “subtle and treacherous” make sense together. On the other hand, the winters can be very “cold and snowy” makes perfect sense. Therefore, Answer (a) is the coordinate adjectives we need to use here
7. For the sentence below, find the correct coordinate adjectives that would best describe the noun.

The riverbed was _______ and ______, making it hard to balance well.
[ ] fishy and frogs
[ ] shallow and deep
[ ] moist and wet
[x] rocky and slippery
The noun in this sentence is “riverbed”. “Fishy and frogs” simply does not make sense and are not coordinate adjectives. As “shallow” and “deep” are opposite conditions, it would not describe the riverbed. They would need to be listed as “shallow or deep” so they also are not coordinate adjectives. The words “moist and wet” are describing the same thing as “moist” and “wet” mean the same and would not be good coordinate adjectives here. “Rocky and slippery” do make perfect sense in describing the riverbed and also in clarifying that it would be hard to balance well. Therefore, Answer (d) is the correct coordinate adjectives
8. For the sentence below, find the correct coordinate adjectives that would best describe the noun.

It was a _________ summer but we all made it through!
[ ] quiet, packed
[ ] sunny, cloudy
[x] long, hot
[ ] last, present
The noun being described in this sentence is “summer.” Looking at the list of possible Answers, using “quiet and packed” does not make sense. Using “sunny and cloudy” refers to opposition conditions so they, too, do not make sense. A “last and present” summer used in this manner does not may any sense at all so Answer (d) would not be correct. However, a “long and hot” summer makes perfect sense making Answer (c) the correct answer and coordinate adjectives
9. For the sentence below, find the correct coordinate adjectives that would best describe the noun.

I am happy to report that Grace’s baby is very ______ and ______!
[x] happy and healthy
[ ] sickly and scrawny
[ ] tiny and small
[ ] born and growing
The noun in this sentence is “baby.” Although “sickly and scrawny” are coordinate adjectives, they are not the best coordinate adjectives in this sentence because they contradict with being “happy to report.” Therefore, Answer (b) would not be the right answer here. Answer (c) “tiny and small” are describing the same condition as they mean the same thing so they would not be good coordinate adjectives in this sentence. Answer (d) “born and growing” simply does not make any sense. However, Answer (a) “happy and healthy” has good coordinating adjectives and goes along with “happy to report.” Answer (a) shows the correct coordinate adjectives for this sentence
10. For the sentence below, find the correct coordinate adjectives that would best describe the noun.

The __________ cellar was alive with roaches.
[ ] bottom, house
[x] dark, musty
[ ] under, ground
[ ] empty, black
The noun in this sentence is “cellar.” Looking at the list of possible Answers, using “bottom and house” does not make any sense. “Under” and “ground” would need to be combined into one word, i.e., underground, and, therefore, are not coordinate adjectives in this sentence. The “empty and black” cellar could be coordinate adjectives except the cellar is “alive with roaches” which would contradict being “empty.” Therefore, Answer (d) is not correct. However, the “dark and musty” cellar makes good sense and Answer (b) is the correct coordinate adjectives
