Whether writing or speaking, there are four basic or common types of sentences that are used. These sentence types include: declarative, imperative, interrogative and exclamatory.
A declarative sentence makes a statement and ends with a period (.).

Example: Fredrick bought a new bike.
Imperative sentences give directions, instructions or commands. These types of sentences also end with a period (.).
Example: Finish your homework before watching any TV.
Interrogative sentences ask a question and end with a question mark (?).
Example: What are the ingredients needed to make a chocolate cake?
Exclamatory sentences are sentences that express strong emotions and excitement. They end with an exclamation point (!).
Example: The sunrise this morning was absolutely amazing!
