What is a measurement? A measurement is a means of defining an object using a fixed set of assigned numbers or other forms to convey size. In the U.S., most measurements begin with the use of a ruler. A ruler is divided in inches. The standard sized ruler has twelve equal sized inches on it. The full twelve inches is equal to one foot.

When a large area is being measured, such as a football field, measuring it in inches would take quite some time so, instead of inches we would jump up to measuring in feet. Again, every twelve inches would equal a foot. This too, however, would take some time in measuring the field. That is when we jump up to the next standard or fixed measurement referred to as a “yard”.

A yard is a measurement that is equal to three (3) feet. 3 feet x 12 inches = 36 inches - therefore, a yard is equal to 36 inches. A football field is 100 yards long. If it is 100 yards long, how many feet would that equal? To find the answer you would multiply 100 yards by 3 feet or 100 x 3 = 300 feet long. To then find how many inches are in 300 feet you multiply 300 x 12 = 3,600 inches.

If you have 60 feet and you wanted to convert that into yards, you would divide 60 feet by 3 yards or 60 ÷ 3 = 20 - so 60 feet is the same as or equal to 20 yards.
